The Whole Ocean of Causes and Conditions
Gopā's account turns inward one more time, recalling the tathāgata's own past causes and conditions across measureless kalpas, before closing this whole liberation-gate with a single rationale — a mind able to know beings, śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, bodhisattvas, and buddhas all at once.
The Whole Ocean of Causes and Conditions
The second liberation-gate closes by turning back to the tathāgata's own history, and then to a single sentence explaining why any of what Gopā has just described is possible at all.
"I also call to mind the whole ocean of causes and conditions belonging to the tathāgata in ages past. That is to say: his cultivating and gathering every skilful means of every vehicle; throughout measureless kalpas, his abiding in the bodhisattva's own practices, purifying buddha-lands, teaching and transforming beings, serving every buddha, establishing dwelling-places, hearing and receiving the dharma expounded, attaining every samādhi, and gaining every sovereign power; his cultivating the pāramitā of giving and entering the ocean of a buddha's own merit, upholding the precepts and practising austerities, being fully endowed with every forbearance, being courageous and diligent, accomplishing every dhyāna, and perfecting pure wisdom; his manifesting birth in every place, his practices and vows of Samantabhadra entirely pure, his universally entering every land, universally purifying every buddha-land, universally entering the ocean of wisdom of every tathāgata, universally gathering the bodhi of every buddha, attaining the great wisdom-light of the tathāgata, and realising the all-knowing nature of every buddha; his accomplishing perfect and complete awakening, and turning the wondrous wheel of dharma; and every one of the assemblies at his awakening-site, and how every being within those assemblies, ever since ages past, had planted wholesome roots, from their very first giving rise to the resolve, ripening beings, cultivating skilful means, growing in thought after thought, and attaining every samādhi, spiritual power, and liberation. All of this, I entirely and fully know. "Why is this? Because this liberation of mine is able to know every being's mental conduct, every being's cultivation of wholesome roots, every being's defilement and purity, every being's every kind of difference, every gate of samādhi of every śrāvaka, every quiescent samādhi, spiritual power, and liberation of every pratyekabuddha, and the liberation-light of every bodhisattva and every tathāgata — all of this, I fully know."
能知一切眾生心行⋯⋯一切聲聞⋯⋯一切緣覺⋯⋯一切菩薩一切如來 — able to know every being's mental conduct⋯⋯every śrāvaka⋯⋯every pratyekabuddha⋯⋯every bodhisattva and every tathāgata. The final rationale runs through the same order this whole second liberation-gate has followed since it began — beings first, then the three vehicles in ascending order — and closes on that order one last time, as if to confirm that the entire account, however vast, has never actually left this single structure.
Part 1207 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle seventy-five. Part 1208 opens Good-Wealth's next question and Gopā's answer — a story reaching back to an ancient world and a crown prince named Awesome Virtue Lord.
