A maiden named Perfect Wondrous Virtue, travelling the same road ahead of the prince, falls instantly in love at the sight of him and threatens to destroy herself if her feelings go unanswered — and her mother's reply names exactly how far out of reach he is.
Not His Match at All
A new pair of figures enters the story — a mother and daughter travelling the same road — and the daughter's first sight of the prince sets off a confrontation her mother tries at once to head off.
「時，有母人名為：善現，將一童女名：具足妙德，顏容端正，色相嚴潔，洪纖得所，修短合度，目髮紺青，聲如梵音，善達工巧，精通辯論，恭勤匪懈，慈愍不害，具足慚愧，柔和質直，離癡寡欲，無諸諂誑，乘妙寶車，采女圍遶，及與其母從王城出，先太子行。見其太子言辭諷詠，心生愛染，而白母言：『我心願得敬事此人，若不遂情，當自殞滅。』母告女言：『莫生此念。何以故？此甚難得。此人具足輪王諸相，後當嗣位作轉輪王，有寶女出，騰空自在。我等卑賤，非其匹偶。此處難得，勿生是念。』
"At that time, there was a woman named Wholesome Manifestation, who brought along a young maiden named Perfect Wondrous Virtue. That maiden was upright and fine in countenance, her form and complexion adorned and pure; ample or slender exactly as fitting, tall or short precisely proportioned; her eyes and hair deep indigo-blue, her voice like the Brahmā-voice; she was skilled and accomplished in every craft, thoroughly versed in debate; reverent and diligent without ever slackening, compassionate and never causing harm; fully endowed with conscience and shame, gentle and upright in nature; free of folly, with few desires, and without any flattery or deceit. Riding in a wondrous jewelled carriage, surrounded by court ladies, she and her mother had set out from the royal city, going ahead of the prince. Seeing the prince, whose very words were like a chanted verse, she gave rise to a mind of loving attachment, and said to her mother: 'My heart wishes to be able to reverently serve this man; if my feelings are not fulfilled, I shall surely destroy myself.' Her mother said to the girl: 'Do not give rise to such a thought. Why is this? He is exceedingly hard to attain. This man is fully endowed with the marks of a wheel-turning king; hereafter he shall succeed to the throne and become a wheel-turning king, and a jewel-woman shall appear for him, able to soar through the sky at will. We are of humble and lowly standing, not his match at all. This is a place beyond your reach — do not give rise to such a thought.'
此人具足輪王諸相，後當嗣位作轉輪王 — this man is fully endowed with the marks of a wheel-turning king; hereafter he shall succeed to the throne and become a wheel-turning king. The mother's refusal is not a judgment of character but a reading of the prince's own body — the very marks catalogued at such length two Parts ago, here cited back as the reason the match is impossible before it has even begun.
