Ocean-Treasury Hard to Surpass
Every road in this story has led here: the prince and the maiden reach the buddha, make their offerings, and hear a teaching that leaves the whole assembly transformed — the maiden most of all, with a samādhi and an irreversibility entirely her own.
Ocean-Treasury Hard to Surpass
The prince and the maiden leave the Garden of Fragrant Shoots for the awakening-site itself, and the scene moves quickly from offerings to teaching to the attainment it produces.
「爾時，太子與妙德女及十千采女并其眷屬，出香芽園，詣法雲光明道場。至已下車，步進詣如來所。見佛身相端嚴寂靜，諸根調順，內外清淨，如大龍池無諸垢濁；皆生淨信，踊躍歡喜，頂禮佛足，遶無數匝。于時，太子及妙德女，各持五百妙寶蓮華供散彼佛。太子為佛造五百精舍，一一皆以香木所成，眾寶莊嚴，五百摩尼以為間錯。時，佛為說普眼燈門修多羅；聞是經已，於一切法中得三昧海，所謂：得普照一切佛願海三昧、普照三世藏三昧、現見一切佛道場三昧、普照一切眾生三昧、普照一切世間智燈三昧、普照一切眾生根智燈三昧、救護一切眾生光明雲三昧、普照一切眾生大明燈三昧、演一切佛法輪三昧、具足普賢清淨行三昧。時，妙德女得三昧，名：難勝海藏，於阿耨多羅三藐三菩提永不退轉。
At that time, the prince, together with the maiden Wondrous Virtue, ten thousand court ladies, and their attendants, left the Garden of Fragrant Shoots and went to the awakening-site of Dharma-Cloud Light. Having arrived, they descended from their carriages and advanced on foot to the place of the tathāgata. They beheld the buddha's own bodily marks, dignified and serene, his every faculty tamed and gentle, pure both within and without, like a great dragon pool free of every defilement and turbidity; and every one of them gave rise to pure faith, leaping for joy, bowing at the buddha's feet and circling him countless times. At that time, the prince and the maiden Wondrous Virtue each held five hundred wondrous jeweled lotus flowers, and scattered them in offering over that buddha. The prince built five hundred dwellings for the buddha, each and every one made of fragrant wood, adorned with every kind of jewel, and inlaid throughout with five hundred maṇi jewels. At that time, the buddha, for their sake, expounded the sūtra of the Universal Eye Lamp-Gate; and having heard this sūtra, they attained, amid every dharma, an ocean of samādhis. Namely: the samādhi of universally illumining the ocean of every buddha's own vow, the samādhi of universally illumining the treasury of the three periods of time, the samādhi of directly beholding every buddha's own awakening-site, the samādhi of universally illumining every living being, the samādhi of the lamp of wisdom universally illumining every world, the samādhi of the lamp of wisdom universally illumining the faculties of every living being, the samādhi of the cloud of light that rescues and protects every living being, the samādhi of the great lamp of brightness universally illumining every living being, the samādhi of expounding the Dharma-wheel of every buddha, and the samādhi of being fully endowed with the pure practice of Samantabhadra. At that time, the maiden Wondrous Virtue attained a samādhi named Ocean-Treasury Hard to Surpass, and from then on never again regressed from anuttara-samyak-sambodhi.
所謂 — namely. Six of the ten samādhis this whole assembly attains open on the same motif, 普照 ("universally illumine") — light named again and again as what this teaching produces — before the tenth and final one turns from sight to practice: being fully endowed with Samantabhadra's own pure conduct. The maiden's own reward stands apart from all ten: a samādhi of her own, named Ocean-Treasury Hard to Surpass, and with it, for the first time in this story, non-retrogression from anuttara-samyak-sambodhi.
