Lamp of the Mind of Every World
The buddha answers the newly consecrated king not with words but with light and a teaching, and the effects cascade through the assembly by the hundreds of thousands — before the king himself, only just crowned, decides even the throne is not enough.
Lamp of the Mind of Every World
The buddha's response to the arriving court comes first as light, then as a dhāraṇī, and the assembly is transformed in tiers — by the hundreds of thousands, by the ten thousands, without measure at all.
「爾時，如來觀察彼王及諸大眾，白毫相中放大光明，名：一切世間心燈，普照十方無量世界，住於一切世主之前，示現如來不可思議大神通力，普令一切應受化者心得清淨。爾時，如來以不思議自在神力，現身超出一切世間，以圓滿音普為大眾說陀羅尼，名：一切法義離闇燈，佛剎微塵數陀羅尼而為眷屬。彼王聞已，即時獲得大智光明；其眾會中，有閻浮提微塵數菩薩，俱時證得此陀羅尼；六十萬那由他人，盡諸有漏，心得解脫；十千眾生，遠塵離垢，得法眼淨；無量眾生，發菩提心。時，佛又以不思議力廣現神變，普於十方無量世界演三乘法化度眾生。
At that time, the tathāgata surveyed that king and the whole great assembly, and from the curl of white hair between his brows released a great light, named Lamp of the Mind of Every World, which universally illumined measureless worlds throughout the ten directions. Abiding before every lord of the world, he manifested the tathāgata's own inconceivable, great spiritual power, universally causing the mind of every being fit to be transformed to attain purity. At that time, the tathāgata, through his inconceivable and sovereign spiritual power, manifested a body that transcended every world, and with a perfect and complete voice universally expounded, for the sake of the great assembly, a dhāraṇī named Lamp That Departs from the Darkness of Every Dharma's Meaning, together with a retinue of dhāraṇīs as numerous as the fine motes of dust in a buddha-land. When that king had heard it, he at once attained the light of great wisdom; and within that assembly, bodhisattvas as numerous as the fine motes of dust in Jambudvīpa all at once realized this very dhāraṇī. Six hundred thousand nayutas of people exhausted every outflow, and their minds attained liberation; ten thousand beings became far removed from dust and free of defilement, and attained the pure Dharma-eye; and measureless beings gave rise to the mind of bodhi. At that time, the buddha, once again through his inconceivable power, extensively manifested spiritual transformations, universally expounding the Dharma of the three vehicles throughout measureless worlds in the ten directions, to teach and liberate every being.
一切世間心燈⋯一切法義離闇燈 — Lamp of the Mind of Every World⋯Lamp That Departs from the Darkness of Every Dharma's Meaning. The light from the buddha's brow and the dhāraṇī spoken in its wake are both given proper names, and both names end on the same word: 燈, lamp. One illumines outward, across measureless worlds; the other illumines inward, dispelling the very darkness that clouds the meaning of the Dharma itself.
King Wealth Lord Goes Forth
The father king, having just handed the throne to his son, does not stop there — he decides the throne itself was never the point.
「時，彼父王作如是念：『我若在家，不能證得如是妙法；若於佛所出家學道，即當成就。』作是念已，前白佛言：『願得從佛出家修學！』佛言：『隨意，宜自知時。』時，財主王與十千人，皆於佛所同時出家。未久之間，悉得成就一切法義離闇燈陀羅尼，亦得如上諸三昧門，又得菩薩十神通門，又得菩薩無邊辯才，又得菩薩無礙淨身，往詣十方諸如來所聽受其法，為大法師演說妙法；復以神力遍十方剎，隨眾生心而為現身，讚佛出現，說佛本行，示佛本緣，稱揚如來自在神力，護持於佛所說教法。
At that time, that father king thought to himself: "If I remain a householder, I shall not be able to realize such a wondrous Dharma as this; but if I go forth from the household life at the buddha's own place to study the path, I shall then accomplish it." Having thought this, he came forward and said to the buddha: "I wish to go forth from the household life and train under you!" The buddha said: "As you wish; you should know the proper time yourself." At that time, King Wealth Lord, together with ten thousand people, all went forth together at the buddha's own place. Before long, they had all accomplished the dhāraṇī Lamp That Departs from the Darkness of Every Dharma's Meaning, and had likewise attained every one of the samādhi-gates described above, and had further attained the bodhisattva's ten gates of spiritual power, the bodhisattva's boundless eloquence, and the bodhisattva's unobstructed and pure body. They went to every tathāgata throughout the ten directions to receive their teaching, and, as great Dharma-teachers, expounded the wondrous Dharma; and moreover, through spiritual power, throughout every land in the ten directions, manifesting bodies according to the minds of every being, they praised the buddha's own appearance in the world, expounded the buddha's own past practices, revealed the buddha's own past causes and conditions, extolled the tathāgata's own sovereign spiritual power, and upheld and protected the teaching the buddha expounds.
我若在家，不能證得如是妙法 — if I remain a householder, I shall not be able to realize such a wondrous Dharma as this. Only one Part ago, King Wealth Lord relinquished the throne to his own son so the whole court could come see this buddha. Here, having barely arrived, he decides that abdication was not enough — and goes forth from the household life himself, taking ten thousand of his own people with him into the very same step.
