Fascicle Seventy-Five Complete

The verse runs forward from the necklace at a beggar's feet to the birth this pilgrimage already knows, through a vision that never found its own edge, and closes on the same plain admission that has closed every teacher's account so far.

Yet I Did Not Fully Understand

The verse carries the whole story forward from the necklace to the vision this pilgrimage has already followed at length, and ends exactly where the prose account did — at the edge of what even this much practice could not reach.

不可說眾會;

不可說世界;

及彼身諸業;

Ru-Yi Translation

After that, throughout the kalpas that followed,
two hundred and fifty of them,
I was born into the household of Wholesome Manifestation,
and named Perfect Wondrous Virtue.

At that time I saw the prince,
and gave rise to a mind of reverence;
I wished to be able to attend and serve him fully,
and was fortunate enough to receive his compassionate acceptance.

I then, together with the prince,
went to pay homage to the buddha Victorious Sun Body;
and once our reverent offerings were complete,
I at once gave rise to the intent for bodhi.

Within that one kalpa,
there were six billion tathāgatas;
and the last of these world-honored buddhas
was named Vast and Great Understanding.

In his presence I attained the pure eye,
coming to know clearly the marks of every dharma;
I universally beheld every place of rebirth,
and forever removed every inverted thought.

I attained the liberation of contemplating
the bodhisattva's own samādhi-state,
and within a single thought entered the ten directions,
an inconceivable ocean of lands.

I beheld every kind of world,
pure and impure, each one distinct;
toward the pure, I felt no craving or delight,
and toward the impure, I felt no aversion or hatred.

I universally beheld, in every world,
the tathāgata seated at his awakening-site,
and all of them, within a single thought,
released measureless light.

Within a single thought I was able to universally enter
ineffable assemblies,
and likewise came to know every one of
the samādhi-gates they had attained.

Within a single thought I was able to know entirely
their every vast and great practice,
their measureless skillful means upon every ground,
and their every ocean of vows.

I contemplated the bodhisattva's own body,
cultivated through boundless kalpas;
and though I sought the very measure of each single pore,
I was unable to find it.

Within every single pore there were lands beyond number,
ineffable in their multitude,
and there was not one wheel of earth, water, fire, or wind
that was not contained within them.

Every kind of establishment,
every kind of shape and form,
every kind of substance and name,
and boundless kinds of adornment —

I beheld every ocean of lands,
ineffable worlds;
and beheld, within them, buddhas
expounding the Dharma to teach and transform every being.

Yet I did not fully understand that bodhisattva's own body,
nor his every bodily deed;
nor did I know his mind and wisdom,
nor the path he practiced throughout the ages."

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

不了菩薩身,及彼身諸業;亦不知心智,諸劫所行道 — yet I did not fully understand that bodhisattva's own body, nor his every bodily deed; nor did I know his mind and wisdom, nor the path he practiced throughout the ages. Fifteen stanzas carry the whole story forward — the necklace, the birth as Wondrous Virtue, the prince, Victorious Sun Body, Vast and Great Understanding, a vision that finds no edge in a single pore — and still close on the identical admission the prose version made two Parts ago. The verse changes the form of the account; it does not change what it can and cannot claim to know.

Good-Wealth Departs

The teaching ends, and the pilgrimage's own gesture — bow, circle, leave without a word — closes the fascicle as quietly as it has closed every visit before this one.

Ru-Yi Translation

At that time, Good-Wealth bowed at her feet, circled her countless times, and took his leave.

Part 1229 Complete — Fascicle Seventy-Five Complete

This closes chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle seventy-five. Part 1230 opens fascicle seventy-six, 入法界品第三十九之十七, with Good-Wealth's arrival before Māyā, the Buddha's own mother — the forty-second teacher named at the very end of Gopā's own account.
