Ten New Eyes

Spirits of bodily hosts praise Lady Māyā before Good-Wealth has even reached her, and a net of light traced from an earring to the crown of his head leaves him with ten new eyes — each one earned for its own distinct reason.

Ten New Eyes

Before Good-Wealth ever reaches Māyā, a light traced through a precise path leaves him transformed — not with one new eye, but with ten, each granted for a separate and specific reason.

Ru-Yi Translation

At that time, there were spirits of bodily hosts, named Lotus-Flower Dharma-Virtue and Wondrous Flower Light, surrounded before and behind by measureless spirits, who came forth from the awakening-site and abided in the sky. Before Good-Wealth, with a wondrous voice, they praised Lady Māyā in every kind of way, and from their own ear-ornaments released a net of light of measureless colors and forms, universally illumining boundless buddha-worlds, causing Good-Wealth to see every buddha in every land throughout the ten directions. That net of light circled the world to the right, and once it had completed a single circuit, it returned and entered the crown of Good-Wealth's head, and then spread throughout every pore of his entire body. Good-Wealth thereupon attained the pure and radiant eye, because he was forever freed from the darkness of every ignorance and delusion; he attained the eye free of cataract, because he was able to understand the nature of every being; he attained the eye free of defilement, because he was able to contemplate the gateway of every dharma's own nature; he attained the pure eye of wisdom, because he was able to contemplate the nature of every buddha-land; he attained the Vairocana eye, because he beheld the buddha's own Dharma-body; he attained the eye of universal light, because he beheld the buddha's own equal and inconceivable body; he attained the eye of unobstructed light, because he was able to observe every ocean of lands, both their formation and their dissolution; he attained the eye of universal illumination, because he beheld every buddha in the ten directions rising up in great skillful means to turn the wheel of the true Dharma; he attained the eye of universal domain, because he beheld measureless buddhas, through their own sovereign power, taming and subduing every being; and he attained the eye of universal sight, because he beheld every buddha appearing in the world within every land.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

從其耳璫放無量色相光明網⋯入善財頂,乃至遍入身諸毛孔 — released a net of light of measureless colors and forms from their own ear-ornaments⋯returned and entered the crown of Good-Wealth's head, and then spread throughout every pore of his entire body. The light's own path is traced with unusual precision — out from an earring, once around the whole world, in through the crown of the head, out again through every pore — before it leaves behind exactly ten new eyes, each one earned for its own separate and specific reason.
