A Rain of Ambrosia
A rākṣasa king named Good Eye scatters flowers over Good-Wealth and offers two decalogues in a row — ten dharmas for drawing near a good spiritual friend, then ten samādhi-gates that narrow, by their own second half, to that single relationship.
Ten Dharmas for Drawing Near
A rākṣasa king guarding the bodhisattva's own Dharma-hall greets Good-Wealth with flowers and the first of two decalogues on how to approach a good spiritual friend at all.
At that time, there was a rākṣasa king who guarded the bodhisattva's own Dharma-hall, named Good Eye, who, together with ten thousand rākṣasas of his own retinue, in the sky, scattered every kind of wondrous flower over Good-Wealth, saying: "Good son! When a bodhisattva accomplishes ten dharmas, they are then able to draw near to every good spiritual friend. What are these ten? Namely: their mind is pure, and free of every flattery and deceit; with great compassion, they equally and universally gather in every being, while knowing that no being has any true reality at all; they advance toward all-knowing wisdom, their mind never regressing; through the power of faith and understanding, they universally enter every buddha's own awakening-site; they attain the pure eye of wisdom, understanding the nature of every dharma; with great loving-kindness, they equally and universally cover every being; through the light of wisdom, they clear away every deluded domain; through a rain of ambrosia, they wash away the heat of birth-and-death; through a vast and expansive eye, they thoroughly perceive every dharma; and their mind forever accords with every good spiritual friend. These are the ten.
以甘露雨滌生死熱 — through a rain of ambrosia, they wash away the heat of birth-and-death. Among ten dharmas otherwise stated in the register of mind and wisdom — purity, compassion, faith, the eye of wisdom — this one alone reaches for weather: a rain that cools what birth-and-death has made feverish.
Ten Samādhi-Gates
A second decalogue follows at once — and where the first ranged widely, this one closes in, its own second half naming the same relationship five times over.
"Furthermore, Son of the Buddha! When a bodhisattva accomplishes ten kinds of samādhi-gate, they then forever behold, directly and in person, every good spiritual friend. What are these ten? Namely: the samādhi of the pure wheel of the emptiness of dharmas, the samādhi of contemplating the ocean of the ten directions, the samādhi of neither abandoning nor diminishing any domain at all, the samādhi of universally beholding the appearance of every buddha, the samādhi of gathering the treasury of every merit, the samādhi of the mind forever never abandoning a good spiritual friend, the samādhi of forever beholding every good spiritual friend giving rise to every buddha's own merit, the samādhi of forever never being apart from any good spiritual friend, the samādhi of forever making offerings to every good spiritual friend, and the samādhi of forever being without fault in the presence of every good spiritual friend. Son of the Buddha! When a bodhisattva accomplishes these ten samādhi-gates, they forever draw near to every good spiritual friend, and moreover attain the samādhi in which every good spiritual friend turns the wheel of every buddha's own Dharma; and having attained this samādhi, they come to know entirely that the very nature of every buddha is equal, and encounter every good spiritual friend wherever they go."
心恒不捨善知識三昧⋯常於一切善知識所無過失三昧 — the samādhi of the mind forever never abandoning a good spiritual friend⋯the samādhi of forever being without fault in the presence of every good spiritual friend. The ten samādhi-gates split cleanly in half: the first five range across emptiness, the ten directions, every buddha, and every merit; the last five name 善知識, good spiritual friend, directly in every single one. A list that opens broad narrows, by its own second half, to a single relationship.
Part 1234 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle seventy-six. Part 1235 follows Good-Wealth's own question to Good Eye — how, and where, does one go looking for a good spiritual friend at all — and the answer that leads him at last toward Māyā herself.
