Mother of Every Bodhisattva

Māyā manifests forms that surpass every world according to what each being's own heart desires, and a long catalogue of her own virtues keeps returning to the same image — an ocean — before closing on the vow that names what she has been all along.

Mother of Every Bodhisattva

Where the last Part named forty bodies she already has, this one shows what she does with them — surpassing every world a being might desire, and gathering every virtue a bodhisattva could need.

Ru-Yi Translation

At that time, Good-Wealth once again saw Lady Māyā, according to whatever each being's own heart delighted in, manifest form-bodies that surpassed every world. Namely: sometimes she manifested a form surpassing the goddesses of the Paranirmita-vaśavartin Heaven, down even to a form surpassing the goddesses of the Four Great Heavenly Kings; sometimes she manifested a form surpassing nāga-women, down even to a form surpassing human women — manifesting measureless form-bodies such as these, bringing benefit to every being. She gathers every dharma that assists the path to all-knowing wisdom, practices the pāramitā of giving with perfect equality, and with great compassion universally covers every world. She gives rise to the tathāgata's own measureless merit, cultivates and increases the mind of all-knowing wisdom, and contemplates and reflects on the true nature of every dharma; she attains an ocean of profound forbearance, is endowed with every gate of concentration, abides in the domain of equal samādhi, attains the perfect and complete light of the tathāgata's own samādhi, and dries up the vast ocean of every being's own affliction; her mind is forever in right concentration, never once disturbed or agitated, forever turning the pure and non-regressing Dharma-wheel, skillfully able to understand every buddha-dharma, and forever contemplating the true nature of every dharma through wisdom; she beholds every tathāgata with a mind never wearied, knows the sequence in which every buddha across the three periods of time appears, forever keeps the samādhi of seeing the buddha directly before her, thoroughly understands the measureless, countless pure paths by which the tathāgata appears in the world, and moves through the very domain of every buddha's own empty space; she universally gathers in every being, teaching and transforming each according to their own mind, bringing them to accomplishment; she enters the buddha's own measureless and pure Dharma-body, accomplishes her great vows, purifies every buddha-land, ultimately tames every being, and her mind forever pervades the very domain of every buddha; she gives rise to the bodhisattva's own sovereign spiritual power, having already attained a Dharma-body pure and undefiled, while forever manifesting measureless form-bodies; she crushes the power of every Māra, accomplishes the power of great wholesome roots, gives rise to the power of the true Dharma, is fully endowed with the power of every buddha, attains the sovereign power of every bodhisattva, and swiftly increases the power of all-knowing wisdom; she attains the buddha's own light of wisdom, universally illumining everything, and knows entirely the ocean of every being's own mind, their every kind of distinct faculty, nature, and understanding of desire; her body universally pervades the ocean of lands throughout the ten directions, and she knows entirely the marks of every land's own formation and dissolution; through a vast and expansive eye she beholds the ocean of the ten directions, through all-pervading wisdom she knows the ocean of the three periods of time, her body universally serves the ocean of every buddha, and her mind forever receives the ocean of every dharma; she cultivates the merit of every tathāgata, gives rise to the wisdom of every bodhisattva, forever delights in contemplating the path every bodhisattva practices from their very first arising of the mind of bodhi all the way to its accomplishment, forever diligently protects every being, forever delights in extolling the merit of every buddha, and vows to become the mother of every bodhisattva.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

獲深忍海⋯身普承事一切佛海,心恒納受一切法海 — she attains an ocean of profound forbearance⋯her body universally serves the ocean of every buddha, and her mind forever receives the ocean of every dharma. The word 海, ocean, recurs eight times across this single passage — forbearance, affliction, the minds of every being, the lands of the ten directions, the ten directions again, the three periods of time, every buddha, and every dharma — as if no vessel smaller than an ocean could ever hold what each of these qualities actually contains.
