Entirely Equal

The bodhisattva's descent from Tuṣita Heaven arrives surrounded by a host the text insists is exactly like him in every quality it can name — vows, practices, wisdom, even his own Dharma-body and form-body — before the whole company comes at last to enter Māyā.

Entirely Equal

The descent from Tuṣita Heaven is not a solitary event — it arrives with a company the text goes out of its way to say is indistinguishable from the one descending.

Ru-Yi Translation

At that time, when the bodhisattva was about to descend in spirit from Tuṣita Heaven, there were bodhisattvas as numerous as the fine motes of dust in ten buddha-lands, every one of them sharing the very same vows, the very same practices, the very same wholesome roots, the very same adornments, the very same liberation, and the very same wisdom as the bodhisattva — and, down even to their every ground, every power, their Dharma-body and form-body, and Samantabhadra's own spiritual powers, practices, and vows, every one of them was entirely equal. Bodhisattvas such as these surrounded him before and behind; and moreover, eighty thousand nāga kings and every lord of the world, riding upon their own palaces, all came together to make offerings. The bodhisattva, at that time, through his own spiritual power, together with every bodhisattva, universally manifested throughout every palace of Tuṣita Heaven; and within each and every palace, he manifested entirely the reflected images of his own birth within the Jambudvīpa of every world throughout the ten directions, teaching and transforming measureless beings through skillful means, causing every bodhisattva to leave behind every laziness and be attached to nothing at all. Moreover, through his own spiritual power, he released a great light, universally illumining the world, breaking apart every darkness, and extinguishing every suffering and affliction, causing every being to recognize entirely their own past-life deeds and karma, and forever escape the evil destinies. And, in order to rescue and protect every being, he universally manifested before them, performing every kind of spiritual transformation. Having manifested wonders such as these, he, together with his own retinue, came to enter my body.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

皆與菩薩同願、同行、同善根、同莊嚴、同解脫、同智慧⋯悉皆同等 — every one of them sharing the very same vows, the very same practices, the very same wholesome roots, the very same adornments, the very same liberation, and the very same wisdom as the bodhisattva⋯every one of them was entirely equal. Ten buddha-lands' worth of dust-mote bodhisattvas accompany this one, and the text does not distinguish him from them by even a single quality it names — not his vows, not his wisdom, not even his own form-body. The moment usually told as one being's singular descent arrives here surrounded by others the text insists are exactly like him in every respect it can list.
