Part 1242 of the collection · Fascicle 76 of 80 · 入法界品第三十九之十七 · T279

Neither Enlarged Nor Cramped

Māyā's body holds assembly after assembly without ever growing larger or smaller, and her claim to motherhood stretches from a single lotus pond in some past life to every buddha this Fortunate Eon holds, before or since.

Neither Enlarged Nor Cramped

Inside Māyā, the bodhisattva's whole retinue moves through worlds as easily as a single step — and her own body, holding all of it, never changes size at all.

Ru-Yi Translation

Those bodhisattvas, within my own belly, moved about freely and without obstruction, sometimes taking a great trichiliocosm as a single step, and sometimes taking worlds as numerous as the fine motes of dust in ineffable, ineffable buddha-lands as a single step. Moreover, in thought after thought, every tathāgata's own place and every bodhisattva assembly throughout ineffable, ineffable worlds in the ten directions, together with the Heaven of the Four Heavenly Kings, Trāyastriṃśa Heaven, and even every Brahmā king of the form realm, wishing to see the spiritual transformation of the bodhisattva dwelling in the womb, reverently made offerings, listened to and received the true Dharma, and all of them entered my own body. Though my own belly was entirely able to hold assemblies such as these, my body was neither enlarged nor cramped; and every one of those bodhisattvas beheld themselves each in their own assembly's own awakening-site, pure and adorned.

雖我腹中悉能容受如是眾會,而身不廣大亦不迫窄 — though my own belly was entirely able to hold assemblies such as these, my body was neither enlarged nor cramped. Two Parts ago she said her outward form never changed at all, yet became equal to space itself; here the same paradox turns up from the other direction — however much she holds, her body is never crowded and never stretched. Size, for a body such as this, simply does not apply.

Mother to Every Buddha of This Eon

What sounded like a single body's own private mystery now widens outward — first to every world like this one, and then to every buddha this eon has named so far.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Good son! Just as, within the Jambudvīpa of this fourfold continent, the bodhisattva took birth and I became his mother, so too, throughout the hundred koṭis of fourfold continents and their Jambudvīpas within a great trichiliocosm, it is entirely the same. Yet this body of mine is, from the very beginning, without duality — it does not dwell in a single place, nor does it dwell in many places. Why is this? Because I cultivate the bodhisattva's own liberation-gate of great vows, illusion-like wisdom, and adornment. Good son! Just as I am the mother of the present World-Honored One, so too have I likewise been the mother of every one of the measureless buddhas of ages past. Good son! Long ago, I was once a spirit of a lotus pond, and at that time there was a bodhisattva who suddenly appeared, transformed, within a lotus-treasury; I then held him up, attended and gazed upon him, and raised him, and the whole world together called me: Mother of the Bodhisattva. And moreover, I was once, long ago, a spirit of the awakening-site, and at that time there was a bodhisattva who suddenly appeared, transformed, within my very embrace, and the world likewise called me: Mother of the Bodhisattva. Good son! There are measureless bodhisattvas in their very last existence who, in this world, manifest birth through every kind of skillful means, and I am the mother to every one of them. Good son! Within this very world's Fortunate Eon, in ages past, when Krakucchanda Buddha, Kanakamuni Buddha, Kāśyapa Buddha, and the present World-Honored Śākyamuni Buddha manifested their own births, I was their mother. In the future, when the bodhisattva Maitreya is about to descend in spirit from Tuṣita Heaven, releasing a great light universally illumining the Dharma-realm, manifesting the spiritual transformation of the birth of every bodhisattva assembly, and being born into a great clan among humankind to tame and subdue every being — at that time too, I shall be his mother.

拘留孫佛、拘那含牟尼佛、迦葉佛及今世尊釋迦牟尼佛⋯彌勒菩薩⋯我於彼時,亦為其母 — Krakucchanda Buddha, Kanakamuni Buddha, Kāśyapa Buddha, and the present World-Honored Śākyamuni Buddha⋯the bodhisattva Maitreya⋯at that time too, I shall be his mother. Four buddhas already named for this very Fortunate Eon, with one more still to come — and this turns out to be only the opening line of a list her own account is about to extend very much further.

Part 1242 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle seventy-six. Part 1243 turns to the list Māyā's account has been building toward — the names of the buddhas still to come in this same Fortunate Eon.
