Never Once False

Most Tranquil closes fascicle seventy-six with a liberation-gate built on a single claim — that speech held sincerely never leaves a bodhisattva's own vow unfulfilled — before sending Good-Wealth toward a youth and a maiden who share a single referral.

Never Once False

Fascicle seventy-six closes on its shortest and most quietly absolute claim yet — that a vow held in perfectly sincere speech never once fails, in any bodhisattva, across all three times.

Ru-Yi Translation

The brāhmaṇa answered, saying: "Good son! I have attained a bodhisattva's own liberation-gate, named True and Sincere Vow-Speech; every bodhisattva of the past, present, and future, because of this very speech, never retrogresses all the way to anuttara-samyak-sambodhi — none has ever retrogressed, none retrogresses now, and none will ever retrogress. Good son! Because I abide in this true and sincere vow-speech, whatever I set my mind to accomplish is never left unfulfilled. Good son! I know only this liberation-gate of sincere speech. As for the bodhisattva-mahāsattvas, whose every action and stillness never contradicts their own true and sincere vow-speech, whose every word is always spoken in sincerity and has never once been false, and from whom measureless merit is thereby brought forth — how could I possibly know, or possibly speak, of it? Good son! To the south of here, there is a city, named Wondrous Mind's Flower Gate; there is a youth there, named Virtue-Born; and there is also a maiden, named Possessing Virtue. Go to them, and ask: how does a bodhisattva study the bodhisattva's own practice, and cultivate the bodhisattva's own path?" At that time, Good-Wealth, honoring the Dharma, bowed at the brāhmaṇa's feet, circled him countless times, and departed, gazing upon him with longing and devotion.

無已退、無現退、無當退 — none has ever retrogressed, none retrogresses now, and none will ever retrogress. The claim spans all three times explicitly, one clause each for past, present, and future, leaving no possible moment for the exception the rest of the sentence already denies.
