The Great Lotus, and Ten Hymns on the Buddha's Body
This installment completes fascicle six and the chapter "The Tathāgata's Manifestation." Light from between the Buddha's brows enters through the soles of his feet; a great lotus flower unlike any other appears before him; and from within the very mark of hair between his brows, a bodhisattva named the Supreme Voice of Every Dharma emerges to sit upon its dais, with the rest of the assembly seated on its stamens. Ten bodhisattvas in turn — Supreme Voice among them — sing of the Buddha's single body pervading the whole Dharma-realm, closing the chapter without the Buddha himself ever speaking a word.
Light from the Brow, and the Great Lotus
At that time, the World-Honored One, wishing to cause the whole great assembly of bodhisattvas to attain the Tathāgata's own boundless power of spiritual transmutation over every domain, emitted light from between his brows. This light was named: the Wisdom-Light of Every Bodhisattva, Universally Illumining the Treasury of the Ten Directions. Its very form was like a cloud-lamp of every jeweled color, shining universally upon every buddha-land of the ten directions, causing the lands within them, and their living beings as well, to be revealed entirely. It also universally shook the net of every world-system, and within each and every mote of dust manifested countless buddhas. According to the differing natures and desires of living beings, it universally rained down clouds of the wondrous Dharma-wheel of every buddha of the three periods of time, revealing the ocean of the Tathāgata's own pāramitās; and it also rained down immeasurable clouds of going-forth, causing every living being to forever cross beyond birth-and-death; and it further rained down clouds of every buddha's great vow, revealing them within every world of the ten directions. Having accomplished this, before the assembly at Samantabhadra's own awakening-site, it circled the Buddha to the right, and entered in through the very soles of his feet.
At that time, before the Buddha, a great lotus flower suddenly appeared. This flower was endowed with ten kinds of adornment that no other lotus flower could ever match. These were: every jewel, interspersed, formed its stem; the sovereign maṇi jewel formed its calyx; every jewel of the Dharma-realm formed its leaves entirely; every fragrant maṇi formed its pistils; Jambūnada gold adorned and graced its dais; a wondrous net covered it above, its light and color pure; within a single thought, it revealed the boundless spiritual transformation of every buddha; it was able to give rise universally to every kind of sound; the sovereign maṇi jewel reflected the Buddha's own body within it; and within its very sound it was able to universally proclaim the vow and practice cultivated by every bodhisattva. No sooner had this flower arisen than, within a single thought, from within the very mark of the Tathāgata's white curl of hair, there was a bodhisattva-mahāsattva named the Supreme Voice of Every Dharma, who, together with bodhisattvas as numerous as the fine motes of dust in a world-ocean, emerged all at once, circling the Tathāgata to the right for immeasurable circuits, and, having done so, bowed in homage at the Buddha's very feet.
The brow-light entering "through the very soles of his feet" is a small but deliberate detail: light emitted from the highest point of the body completing its circuit at the lowest closes a figure, suggesting the Buddha's own body as a single, unbroken field rather than a hierarchy of higher and lower parts. The lotus that follows is explicitly said to surpass every other lotus in existence — its stem, calyx, leaves, and fruit are each named individually, a level of specificity the sūtra rarely spends on a single object, marking this flower as the stage for what is about to happen: a bodhisattva born directly from the white ūrṇā between the Buddha's own brows, traditionally counted among the thirty-two marks of a great being.
The Supreme Voice of Every Dharma
At that time, the Bodhisattva Supreme Voice sat upon the lotus's dais, and the assembly of bodhisattvas sat upon the lotus's pistils, each dwelling in order upon it. This Bodhisattva, the Supreme Voice of Every Dharma, thoroughly understood the profound Dharma-realm, giving rise to great joy; he had entered the very conduct of the Buddha, his wisdom never obstructed or delayed; he had entered the immeasurable ocean of the Buddha's own Dharma-body, going to the place of every Tathāgata in every land; every pore of his body manifested spiritual transmutation entirely, and within every single thought he universally beheld the whole Dharma-realm; every buddha of the ten directions together bestowed their power upon him, causing him to abide securely in every samādhi universally, forever beholding, to the very end of future kalpas, the boundless body of every buddha's ocean of merit throughout the Dharma-realm, down to every samādhi, liberation, and spiritual transformation. Then, amid the assembly, sustained by the Buddha's majestic spirit, he contemplated the ten directions, and spoke a verse, saying:
"The Buddha's body fills the Dharma-realm entirely, manifesting universally before every living being,
responding to every condition and impulse without exception, and yet forever dwelling upon this very seat of bodhi.
Within each and every pore of the Tathāgata sit buddhas as numerous as the motes of dust in every land,
surrounded together by an assembly of bodhisattvas, expounding the excellent conduct of Samantabhadra.
The Tathāgata dwells at ease upon the seat of bodhi, and within a single hair reveals many an ocean of lands,
and every single hair likewise does the same, pervading the Dharma-realm universally in just this way.
Within each and every land he is established entirely, pervading every land and territory completely,
and bodhisattvas of the ten directions gather like clouds, all coming without exception to this very awakening-site.
The ocean of bodhisattvas of merit and light, as numerous as the fine motes of dust in every land, dwells universally within the Tathāgata's own assembly,
pervading even the whole Dharma-realm entirely.
Within every land, as numerous as the motes of dust in the Dharma-realm, he appears within every single assembly —
such is the domain of wisdom of his own dividing of body, which is established within the conduct of Samantabhadra.
Within the assembly of every buddha, bodhisattvas of supreme wisdom sit together in unison,
each and every one listening to the Dharma and giving rise to joy, practicing in every place across immeasurable kalpas.
Having already entered Samantabhadra's own vast vow, each and every one brings forth every buddha-dharma,
and within Vairocana's own ocean of the Dharma, practices and thereby attains the Tathāgata's own ground.
What Samantabhadra Bodhisattva has awakened to, every Tathāgata together praises with delight;
he has already attained the great spiritual transmutation of every buddha, circulating throughout the Dharma-realm, reaching everywhere without exception.
As numerous as the fine motes of dust in every land, he forever manifests clouds of his own body, filling everything entirely,
universally emitting great light for the sake of living beings, each one raining the rain of the Dharma suited to their own mind."
Nine More Hymns on the Buddha's Body
At that time, amid the assembly there was further a bodhisattva-mahāsattva named Observing Every Supreme Dharma, the King of Lotus-Light's Wisdom, who, sustained by the Buddha's majestic spirit, contemplated the ten directions, and spoke a verse, saying:
"The Tathāgata's profound wisdom universally enters the Dharma-realm, able to turn according to the three periods of time,
becoming a bright guide for the world. Every buddha shares the same Dharma-body, relying on nothing, without any distinction,
and, according to the intent of every living being, causes them to see the Buddha's own bodily form.
Fully endowed with omniscience, understanding every dharma entirely, within every land, there is nothing he fails to manifest.
The Buddha's body and his light, their forms and marks inconceivable, whoever among living beings has faith and delight in it,
he causes them all to see it according to what is fitting.
From upon a single buddha's body, he transforms into immeasurable buddhas, his thunder-voice pervading every land,
expounding the Dharma as deep as the ocean. Within each and every pore, a net of light pervades the ten directions,
proclaiming the Buddha's wondrous voice, taming those hard to tame.
Within the Tathāgata's own light, he forever sends forth a profound, wondrous voice, praising the ocean of the Buddha's merit and the conduct of the bodhisattvas.
The Buddha turns the wheel of the true Dharma, immeasurable and without any bound,
and the Dharma he teaches has no equal, unfathomable by shallow wisdom.
Within every world, he manifests his body to accomplish true awakening, each and every one rousing spiritual transformation, filling the Dharma-realm entirely.
Within each and every body of the Tathāgata, he manifests buddhas equal to living beings themselves,
and within every land as numerous as motes of dust, he universally manifests the power of spiritual transmutation."
At that time, amid the assembly there was further a bodhisattva-mahāsattva named Dharma-Joy's Wisdom-Light, who, sustained by the Buddha's majestic spirit, contemplated the ten directions, and spoke a verse, saying:
"The Buddha's body constantly reveals itself, filling the Dharma-realm entirely, forever proclaiming a vast voice,
shaking every land of the ten directions universally. The Tathāgata manifests his body universally, entering into the world entirely,
and, according to what living beings delight in and desire, reveals his power of spiritual transmutation.
The Buddha, according to the minds of living beings, manifests universally before them, and whatever living beings behold is entirely the Buddha's own spiritual power.
His light is without any bound, and his teaching of the Dharma is likewise immeasurable,
and the Buddha's children, according to their own wisdom, are able to enter and to contemplate it.
The Buddha's body has no birth at all, and yet is able to reveal itself as being born; the nature of the Dharma is like empty space, and every buddha abides within it.
Without abiding and without going anywhere, he is beheld in every single place, his light reaching everywhere without exception, his renown heard everywhere, far and wide.
Without any fixed substance, without any place of abode, and without any birth that could ever be found, without mark and without form, whatever is manifest is entirely like a reflection.
The Buddha, according to the minds of living beings, raises up the great cloud of the Dharma for their sake,
revealing awakening and taming them through every kind of skillful gateway.
Within every world, he is beheld seated at the awakening-site, surrounded by the great assembly, shining forth upon every land of the ten directions.
Every buddha's body possesses every inexhaustible mark, and though his manifestations are immeasurable, his forms and marks are never exhausted at all."
At that time, amid the assembly there was further a bodhisattva-mahāsattva named the Fragrant Flame's Light, Universally Bright Wisdom, who, sustained by the Buddha's majestic spirit, contemplated the ten directions, and spoke a verse, saying:
"Every bodhisattva of this assembly has entered the Buddha's own ground, hard to conceive, and each and every one is able to see the spiritual power of every buddha entirely.
Their body of wisdom is able to enter universally into every mote of dust in every land,
and, seeing their own body dwelling within it, they behold every buddha universally.
Like a reflection appearing in every land, at the place of every Tathāgata, within every one of them entirely, they manifest the very work of spiritual transmutation.
Every conduct and vow of Samantabhadra, already cultivated and made clear and pure,
enables them, within every land, to universally behold the Buddha's own spiritual transformation.
Their body dwells in every place, and everything is equal entirely, and their wisdom, thus able to act, enters the very domain of the Buddha.
Having already realized the Tathāgata's own wisdom, illumining the Dharma-realm equally,
they universally enter the Buddha's very pores, the whole ocean of every land.
Within every buddha-land, they manifest the power of spiritual transmutation entirely, revealing every kind of body, and every kind of name.
Able, within the space of a single thought, to manifest every spiritual transformation universally —
accomplishing true awakening at the awakening-site, and turning the wondrous Dharma-wheel.
Every vast land, across a hundred million inconceivable kalpas, the bodhisattva, within his very samādhi, is able to manifest entirely within a single thought.
Within every buddha-land, each and every bodhisattva universally enters into the Buddha's own body, boundless and inexhaustible."
At that time, amid the assembly there was further a bodhisattva-mahāsattva named the Lion's Vigorous Wisdom-Light, who, sustained by the Buddha's majestic spirit, beheld the ten directions everywhere, and spoke a verse, saying:
"The Buddha Vairocana is able to turn the wheel of the true Dharma, and, throughout every land of the Dharma-realm, pervades it entirely like a cloud.
Within all the great world-oceans that exist throughout the ten directions,
through the Buddha's power of spiritual transmutation and vow, he turns the Dharma-wheel in every single place.
Within the vast assembly of every land, his names are each distinct, and, according to what is fitting, he expounds the wondrous Dharma.
The Tathāgata's great, majestic power is accomplished through Samantabhadra's own vow,
and within every land there is nowhere his wondrous voice fails to reach.
The Buddha's body, equal to the motes of dust in every land, universally rains down the rain of the Dharma, without birth, without distinction, manifesting throughout every world.
Across countless hundreds of millions of kalpas, within every land as numerous as motes of dust,
the deeds practiced in ages past, his wondrous voice fully proclaims them all.
Throughout every land of the ten directions, as numerous as motes of dust, a net of light pervades everything entirely, and within that light there is a buddha in every one, universally transforming every multitude of living beings.
The Buddha's body is without any distinction, filling the Dharma-realm entirely,
and is able to cause his own form-body to be seen, skillfully taming beings according to their own capacity.
Every guide that exists in every land of the three periods of time, their every kind of name distinct, teaches the Dharma for their sake and causes it all to be seen.
Past, future, and present — every Tathāgata, the wondrous Dharma-wheel that they turn, this very assembly is able to hear it all."
At that time, amid the assembly there was further a bodhisattva-mahāsattva named the Ocean of Dharma's Wisdom, Treasury of Merit, who, sustained by the Buddha's majestic spirit, contemplated the ten directions, and spoke a verse, saying:
"The Buddha's children in this assembly have skillfully cultivated every wisdom,
and these very people have already been able to enter such a skillful gateway.
Within each and every land, they universally proclaim a vast voice,
teaching the very place of the Buddha's own conduct, heard throughout every land of the ten directions.
Within each and every thought of mind, they universally contemplate every dharma,
abiding securely in the ground of suchness, thoroughly understanding the whole ocean of every dharma.
Within each and every buddha's body, across a hundred million inconceivable kalpas,
they cultivate the pāramitās, and adorn and purify every land.
Within each and every mote of dust, they are able to realize every dharma,
and thus, without any obstruction, they travel throughout every land of the ten directions.
To each and every buddha-land, they go entirely without exception,
beholding the Buddha's own power of spiritual transmutation, entering the very place of the Buddha's own conduct.
The vast voice of every buddha, there is nowhere in the Dharma-realm it fails to be heard,
and the bodhisattva is able to understand it, skillfully entering the ocean of every voice.
Across an ocean of kalpas he proclaims his wondrous voice, and that voice is equal, without distinction,
and the one whose wisdom pervades the three periods of time enters that very ground of voice.
Every voice that living beings possess, and the Buddha's own sovereign voice,
having attained the wisdom of every voice, they are able to understand it all entirely.
Progressing from ground to ground, abiding within the very ground of power,
diligently practicing across a hundred million kalpas — the Dharma they attain is just like this."
At that time, amid the assembly there was further a bodhisattva-mahāsattva named the Lamp of Wisdom, Universally Bright, who, sustained by the Buddha's majestic spirit, contemplated the ten directions, and spoke a verse, saying:
"Every Tathāgata is far removed from every mark, and if one is able to know this Dharma, only then does one truly see the guide of the world.
Within the bodhisattva's own samādhi, the light of wisdom is universally clear,
able to know the sovereign nature of every buddha.
Beholding the Buddha's true, real substance, one thereby awakens to the profound Dharma, universally contemplating the Dharma-realm, taking on a body according to one's own vow.
Born from the ocean of blessing, abiding securely in the ground of wisdom,
contemplating every dharma, one practices the most excellent path.
Within every buddha-land, at the place of every Tathāgata, pervading the Dharma-realm thus, one beholds the true, real substance entirely.
Throughout the vast lands of the ten directions, diligently practicing across a hundred million kalpas,
one is able to roam within the perfect, universal knowledge of the whole ocean of every dharma.
The one, firm, and dense body is seen within every mote of dust, without birth and without mark, manifesting universally throughout every land.
According to the minds of every living being, it manifests universally before them,
revealing every kind of taming, swiftly causing them to turn toward the path of the Buddha.
Through the Buddha's own majestic spirit, bodhisattvas appear, and, empowered by the Buddha's own power, they universally behold every Tathāgata.
Every guide of the multitude, with immeasurable majestic, spiritual power,
awakens every bodhisattva, pervading the Dharma-realm entirely."
At that time, amid the assembly there was further a bodhisattva-mahāsattva named the Flower-Flame Topknot's Universally Bright Wisdom, who, sustained by the Buddha's majestic power, contemplated the ten directions, and spoke a verse, saying:
"Within every land, a subtle, wondrous voice is universally proclaimed, extolling the Buddha's merit, filling the Dharma-realm entirely.
The Buddha takes the Dharma as his very body, pure like empty space,
and every form and shape he manifests causes beings to enter this very Dharma.
If there is one who has profound faith and joy, and is gathered in by the Buddha, one should know that such a person is able to give rise to the wisdom that understands the Buddha.
Those of little wisdom are unable to know this Dharma;
only the one with a pure eye of wisdom is able to see it here.
Through the Buddha's own majestic, spiritual power, one contemplates every dharma, and, whether entering, abiding, or emerging, whatever is seen is entirely clear.
Within every dharma, the Dharma-gateway is without any bound,
accomplishing omniscience, entering the profound ocean of the Dharma.
Abiding securely in the Buddha's own land, appearing in every place, neither going anywhere nor coming from anywhere — the Dharma of every buddha is just like this.
Throughout the whole ocean of every living being, the Buddha's body appears like a reflection,
and, according to each one's own distinct understanding, they behold the guide in just this way.
Within every single pore, each and every one manifests spiritual transmutation, and the one who practices and cultivates Samantabhadra's own vow, if pure, is able to see it.
The Buddha, with each and every one of his bodies, turns the Dharma-wheel in every single place,
pervading the Dharma-realm entirely, beyond what any conception could ever reach."
At that time, amid the assembly there was further a bodhisattva-mahāsattva named Majestic Virtue's Wisdom, Inexhaustible Light, who, sustained by the Buddha's majestic spirit, contemplated the ten directions, and spoke a verse, saying:
"Within each and every buddha-land, he sits at the awakening-site in every single place, surrounded together by the assembly, and every army of Māra is entirely subdued.
The Buddha's body emits light, filling the ten directions entirely,
revealing itself according to what is fitting, its forms and marks not of any single kind.
Within each and every mote of dust, light fills it entirely, and every land of the ten directions is universally seen, each distinct in every kind.
The ocean of every land of the ten directions, immeasurable lands of every kind,
are all entirely level and pure, formed of indranīla jewel.
Some are inverted, some stand to the side, some are like a closed lotus flower, some round, some square — every kind of form and shape.
Every land of the Dharma-realm, he travels through unobstructed,
and within every assembly, he forever turns the wondrous Dharma-wheel.
The Buddha's body is inconceivable, and every land dwells within it entirely, and, in every single place, he guides the world, expounding the true Dharma.
The wondrous Dharma-wheel he turns has a Dharma-nature without any distinction,
relying on the one true principle to expound the mark of every dharma.
The Buddha, with his perfect and complete voice, clarifies the true principle, and, according to each one's own distinct understanding, manifests the inexhaustible Dharma-gateway.
Within every land, he is beheld seated at the awakening-site,
his body appearing like a reflection, and neither its arising nor its ceasing can ever be found."
At that time, amid the assembly there was further a bodhisattva-mahāsattva named the Dharma-Realm's Universal, Bright Wisdom, who, sustained by the Buddha's majestic power, contemplated the ten directions, and spoke a verse, saying:
"The Tathāgata's subtle, wondrous body, its forms and marks are inconceivable, and whoever beholds it gives rise to joy, reverence, faith, and delight in the Dharma.
Every mark of the Buddha's body manifests immeasurable buddhas entirely,
universally entering the realm of the ten directions, within each and every mote of dust.
Throughout the ocean of every land of the ten directions, immeasurable, boundless buddhas, within every single thought, each and every one manifests spiritual transmutation.
Bodhisattvas of great wisdom, entering deeply into the ocean of the Dharma,
empowered by the Buddha's own power, are able to know this skillful means.
If there is one who already abides securely in every conduct and vow of Samantabhadra, that one beholds every land and the spiritual power of every buddha.
If a person has faith and understanding, together with every great vow,
and is fully endowed with profound wisdom, that one thoroughly comprehends every dharma.
Able, with respect to the body of every buddha, to contemplate each and every one, unobstructed in form and voice, thoroughly understanding every domain.
Able, with respect to the body of every buddha, to abide securely in the very conduct of wisdom,
swiftly entering the Tathāgata's own ground, universally gathering in the Dharma-realm.
As numerous as the fine motes of dust in a buddha-land, every such land, he is able to cause, within a single thought, to be manifest within each and every mote of dust.
Every land, together with every deed of spiritual transmutation, is manifest entirely within a single land —
such is the power of the bodhisattva."
At that time, amid the assembly there was further a bodhisattva-mahāsattva named the Power of Diligence's Unobstructed Wisdom, who, sustained by the Buddha's majestic spirit, contemplated the ten directions, and spoke a verse, saying:
"The Buddha proclaims a single wondrous voice, heard throughout every land of the ten directions, every sound entirely complete within it, the rain of the Dharma filling everything universally.
The whole ocean of every kind of speech, every voice suited to every kind,
within every buddha-land, turns the pure Dharma-wheel.
Within every land, the Buddha's spiritual transformation is beheld entirely, and, listening to the Buddha's voice teaching the Dharma, upon hearing it, one hastens toward bodhi.
Throughout every land of the Dharma-realm, within each and every mote of dust,
the Tathāgata's own liberating power manifests his body universally there.
The Dharma-body is the same as empty space, unobstructed, without any distinction, and its form and shape are like a reflection, every kind of mark manifest.
The reflection has no fixed place, like space, without any fixed nature,
and the one of vast wisdom thoroughly understands its equality.
The Buddha's body cannot be grasped at all, without birth and without any arising or activity, and yet, responding to things, it manifests universally before them, equal like empty space itself.
Every buddha that exists in the ten directions enters entirely within a single pore,
each and every one manifesting spiritual transmutation, which the eye of wisdom is able to behold.
The Buddha Vairocana, the power of his vow pervading the Dharma-realm, within every land, forever turns the unsurpassed wheel.
Within a single hair he manifests spiritual transformation, which every buddha proclaims together,
and, passing through immeasurable kalpas, its farther bound could never be found."
Ten bodhisattvas have now sung in a row — Supreme Voice of Every Dharma, born from the Buddha's own brow-mark, and nine more who simply "further" appear in the assembly with no stated origin — and not one of them has been answered by the Buddha in speech. The chapter's entire content has been light, a lotus, an emergent bodhisattva, and verse upon verse converging on a single claim from every possible angle: that the Buddha's body is not confined to any one place, that it appears differently to different beings without ever being divided, and that this is somehow compatible with him "forever dwelling upon this very seat of bodhi" without moving at all. Chapter three, opening the next fascicle, finally gives this question its formal answer — not through further description, but through Samantabhadra himself entering samādhi.
Part 13 Complete — Fascicle Six Complete
Within this very awakening-site of the four continents, through the Buddha's spiritual power, from each of the ten directions came together an assembly of bodhisattvas as numerous as the fine motes of dust in a hundred million world-oceans. One should understand that, throughout every world-ocean, at every single awakening-site of every set of four continents, it is entirely the same.
This closes Part 13, fascicle six, and the chapter "The Tathāgata's Manifestation" (如來現相品): the assembly's twenty unspoken questions, the Buddha's answering light from his teeth and his brow, bodhisattvas arriving from ten world-systems in the ten directions, a great lotus flower unlike any other, the Bodhisattva Supreme Voice of Every Dharma born from the Buddha's own ūrṇā, and ten hymns converging on a single claim — that the Buddha's body pervades the whole Dharma-realm without ever leaving his own seat. Fascicle seven opens the sūtra's third chapter, in which Samantabhadra himself enters samādhi.
