Part 141 of the collection · Fascicle 20 of 80 · 十行品第二十一之二 · T279

No Defilement, No Purity

Fascicle twenty opens directly into the seventh practice, free of attachment — a bodhisattva who makes offerings to countless buddhas across kalpas beyond telling, seeing every land, every teaching, every assembly, and clinging to none of it, because within the buddha-dharma there is no defilement and no purity, no darkness and no brightness at all.

The Seventh Practice: Free of Attachment

Ru-Yi Translation

"Son of the Buddha! What is a bodhisattva-mahāsattva's own practice free of attachment? Son of the Buddha, this bodhisattva, with a mind free of attachment, is able, moment after moment, to enter asaṃkhyeya worlds, and to adorn and purify asaṃkhyeya worlds. Toward every world, their mind clings to nothing at all, as they go to the place of asaṃkhyeya tathāgatas, revering and bowing to them, attending upon and making offerings to them. With asaṃkhyeya flowers, asaṃkhyeya incense, asaṃkhyeya garlands, asaṃkhyeya anointing incense, powdered incense, garments, treasures, banners, streamers, and wondrous canopies, and every kind of adorning implement, each in asaṃkhyeya number, do they make offerings; such offerings as this are made for the sake of the ultimate, unconditioned dharma, and for the sake of abiding in the inconceivable dharma.

Ru-Yi Translation

Moment after moment, they see countless buddhas; toward the place of every buddha, their mind clings to nothing at all; toward every buddha-land, likewise they cling to nothing; toward the buddha's own excellent marks, likewise they cling to nothing; seeing the buddha's own light and hearing the buddha teach the Dharma, likewise they cling to nothing; toward the worlds of the ten directions, and every assembly belonging to the buddhas and bodhisattvas, likewise they cling to nothing. Having heard the buddha-dharma, their mind gives rise to joy, their resolve and strength vast and expansive, able to gather in and able to practice every bodhisattva conduct — and yet, toward the buddha-dharma itself, they likewise cling to nothing.

Ru-Yi Translation

This bodhisattva, throughout kalpas beyond telling, sees buddhas beyond telling appearing within the world, and at the place of each and every buddha, attends upon and makes offerings to them, exhausting kalpas beyond telling entirely, their mind never once wearied or satiated; seeing the buddhas and hearing the Dharma, and seeing the adornment of the bodhisattvas' own assemblies, they cling to none of it at all; seeing impure worlds, likewise they feel no aversion or hatred. Why is this? Because this bodhisattva contemplates in accordance with the very dharma of every buddha. Within the buddha-dharma, there is no defilement and no purity, no darkness and no brightness, no difference and no oneness, no truth and no falsehood, no security and no peril, no right path and no wrong path.

Ru-Yi Translation

The bodhisattva, entering deeply into the Dharma-realm in this way, teaches and transforms living beings, and yet gives rise to no attachment toward living beings; upholds and retains every dharma, and yet gives rise to no attachment toward any dharma; gives rise to the mind of bodhi, abiding in the Buddha's own abode, and yet gives rise to no attachment toward the Buddha's own abode; though they engage in speech, their mind clings to nothing toward that very speech; entering the destinies of living beings, their mind clings to nothing toward those destinies of living beings; thoroughly understanding samādhi, able to enter it and able to abide within it, and yet their mind clings to nothing toward that very samādhi; going to immeasurable buddha-lands, whether entering them, seeing them, or abiding within them, their mind clings to nothing toward those buddha-lands, and when they depart from them, they harbor no longing or attachment either.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

The list of paired opposites the buddha-dharma is said to be free of — "no defilement, no purity, no darkness, no brightness, no difference, no oneness" — is not a denial that impure worlds exist; the very next sentence confirms the bodhisattva sees them. The point instead is that revulsion is not a fixed feature of dharmas themselves, only of a mind that has not yet let go of grasping — which is exactly what this seventh practice, named for its freedom from attachment, is training.
