Part 150 of the collection · Fascicle 20 of 80 · 十行品第二十一之二(續) · T279

Speaking Exactly as They Act

The tenth and final practice opens with the plainest possible standard for truthfulness — speech that matches action exactly, and action that matches speech — extended into the ten powers of a buddha's own wisdom, and closing with a vow that reorders the whole sequence of awakening: every living being reaches liberation first, and only then does the bodhisattva seek it for themselves.

The Tenth Practice: Truth

Ru-Yi Translation

"Son of the Buddha! What is a bodhisattva-mahāsattva's own practice of truth? This bodhisattva accomplishes the very foremost, truthful, sincere speech, able to act exactly as they speak, and able to speak exactly as they act. This bodhisattva studies the true speech of the buddhas of the three periods of time, enters the very lineage of the buddhas of the three periods of time, becomes equal to the wholesome roots of the buddhas of the three periods of time, attains the non-dual speech of the buddhas of the three periods of time, and, following the Tathāgata, brings their own study of wisdom to accomplishment. This bodhisattva accomplishes the wisdom of knowing what is possible and what is impossible for living beings, the wisdom of karmic recompense across the past, the future, and the present, the wisdom of the sharpness or dullness of every faculty, the wisdom of every kind of realm, the wisdom of every kind of understanding, the wisdom of the path to every destination, the wisdom of the right and wrong time for the arising of stain and purity within every meditative absorption, liberation, and samādhi, the wisdom that recollects past lives throughout every world, the wisdom of the heavenly eye, and the wisdom of the exhaustion of every defilement, and yet they never once let go of any bodhisattva practice. Why is this? Because they wish to teach and transform every living being, causing every one of them to become entirely pure."

Chinese Source

此菩薩復生如是增上心:『若我不令一切眾生住無上解脫道,而我先成阿耨多羅三藐三菩提者,則違我本願,是所不應。是故,要當先令一切眾生得無上菩提、無餘涅槃,然後成佛。』

Ru-Yi Translation

This bodhisattva further gives rise to such a resolve, ever increasing, as this: "Were I not to cause every living being to abide upon the unsurpassed path of liberation, and were I instead to first accomplish unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening for myself, this would violate my own original vow, and would not be fitting at all. For this reason, I must certainly first cause every living being to attain unsurpassed bodhi and nirvāṇa without remainder, and only afterward accomplish buddhahood myself."

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

The ten kinds of wisdom listed here — knowing what is possible and impossible, karmic recompense, faculties, realms, understanding, paths, meditative states, past lives, the heavenly eye, and the exhaustion of defilement — correspond exactly to the classical ten powers (十力) traditionally ascribed to a buddha alone. Naming them as something a bodhisattva accomplishes even before buddhahood, and then immediately vowing to place every living being's liberation ahead of one's own, gives the tenth practice its title: this is truth not as a doctrine stated, but as a vow whose sequence is kept exactly as spoken.
