An Unasked Friend
Living beings never asked the bodhisattva to help them — that is exactly the point. Six declarations of "I am" follow, each grounded not in personal achievement but in service given before it was requested, and a body that manifests every land, every living being, every dharma, and every buddha within itself.
Six Declarations
"Why is this? It was not that living beings asked me to give rise to the mind of bodhi — I myself became, for the sake of living beings, an unasked friend, wishing to first cause every living being to be fully satisfied in wholesome roots and to accomplish all-knowing wisdom. For this reason: I am the most supreme, because I cling to nothing in the whole world; I am the most exalted, because I abide in the unsurpassed ground of the Tamer; I am free of every veil, because I understand living beings without any boundary at all; I am already accomplished, because my own original vow is fulfilled; I am skillfully transformed, because I am adorned with the bodhisattva's own merit; I am well supported, because I am gathered in and embraced by the buddhas of the three periods of time."
This bodhisattva-mahāsattva, never letting go of their own original vow, attains entry into the unsurpassed adornment of wisdom, benefiting living beings and causing every one of them to be entirely satisfied; in accordance with their own original vow, all of it is brought to its ultimate completion; sovereign and free in wisdom within every dharma, they cause every living being to universally attain purity; moment after moment they travel throughout the worlds of the ten directions, moment after moment they universally go to lands of buddhas beyond telling, beyond all telling, moment after moment they entirely see buddhas beyond telling, beyond all telling, and their own adorned and pure lands, manifesting the Tathāgata's own sovereign spiritual power. Filling the whole Dharma-realm and the realm of empty space, this bodhisattva manifests immeasurable bodies, universally entering the world while relying on nothing at all; and within their own body, they manifest every land, every living being, every dharma, and every buddha.
This bodhisattva knows every kind of thought, every kind of desire, every kind of understanding, every kind of karmic recompense, and every kind of wholesome root that living beings have, and, in accordance with what fits each one, manifests their own body and tames them accordingly; contemplating every bodhisattva as like an illusion, every dharma as like a magical transformation, the appearance of a buddha within the world as like a reflection, and the whole world as like a dream, they attain an inexhaustible treasury of meaning-bodies and syllable-bodies; sovereign and free in right mindfulness, they resolutely and fully understand every dharma; their wisdom most supreme, they enter the true reality-mark of every samādhi, abiding in the single, non-dual ground.
"It was not that living beings asked me" reframes every one of the six "I am" declarations that follow it: none of them claim status earned through accomplishment measured against others, but status that exists only because the bodhisattva showed up before being asked to. This is the practice of truth's own particular register — not truth as correspondence between statement and fact, but truth as a promise kept even when no one required it to be made.
