The Great Lion's Roar Among Humankind

Because every living being clings to duality, the bodhisattva abides in great compassion — and the tenth practice closes with entry into the Buddha's own ten powers, Indra's net, and the courageous lion's roar among humankind, completing all ten practices Merit Grove Bodhisattva set out to name many Parts ago.

The Lion's Roar Among Humankind

Ru-Yi Translation

The bodhisattva-mahāsattva, because every living being clings to duality, abides settled in great compassion, cultivating and practicing such a tranquil, extinguished dharma as this, attaining the Buddha's own ten powers, entering the Dharma-realm of Indra's net, accomplishing the Tathāgata's own unobstructed liberation, the courageous great lion's roar among humankind; attaining fearlessness, they are able to turn the unobstructed, pure wheel of the Dharma; attaining the liberation of wisdom, they thoroughly understand the realm of the whole world; severing the returning current of birth-and-death, they enter the great ocean of wisdom; for the sake of every living being, they guard and uphold the true Dharma of the buddhas of the three periods of time, reaching the very source and depth of the true reality of the whole ocean of buddha-dharma. The bodhisattva, having abided in this practice of truth, causes every deva, human, Māra, Brahmā, śramaṇa, brāhmaṇa, gandharva, and asura of the whole world who draws near to them to be entirely awakened, joyful, and pure. This is called the bodhisattva-mahāsattva's own tenth practice, the practice of truth."

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

Indra's net (因陀羅網) — a net stretched across the palace of the god Indra, hung with a jewel at every knot, each jewel reflecting every other jewel completely — becomes, from this point in Huayan thought onward, the school's own central image for how all things interpenetrate without obstruction. Its appearance here, right at the seam where the ten practices close, is no accident: everything the ten practices have built toward — non-attachment, non-duality, a body that manifests every land and every being within itself — is exactly what the net's mutual reflection describes visually. With this, all ten practices Merit Grove Bodhisattva set out to name at the start of the chapter — joy, benefiting others, never opposing, never yielding, freedom from confusion, skillful manifestation, freedom from attachment, the difficult to attain, wholesome dharmas, and truth — are now complete.

All Ten Practices Complete

This closes the tenth and final practice, the practice of truth, and with it Merit Grove Bodhisattva's full exposition of the ten practices. The chapter continues in Part 153 with the earth's own response to this teaching.
