Fearlessness, Purity, and the Perfection of Giving
The hymn's refrain continues to gather qualities together — the peerless great guide, the one beyond all comparison, and the one of most supreme wisdom — before turning to the perfection of giving fully brought to completion, and then to wisdom itself: the profound ground it enters, the samādhi it masters, and the vajra-like firmness in which it comes to rest.
遠離世間諸過患，普與眾生安隱樂，
能為無等大導師，彼勝德者行斯道。
恒以無畏施眾生，普令一切皆欣慶，
其心清淨離染濁，彼無等者行斯道。
意業清淨極調善，離諸戲論無口過，
威光圓滿眾所欽，彼最勝者行斯道。
入真實義到彼岸，住功德處心永寂，
諸佛護念恒不忘，彼滅有者行斯道。
Forever apart from every fault and affliction of the world, universally bestowing peace and ease upon living beings, able to become the peerless great guide — those of such supreme virtue practice this path. Forever bestowing fearlessness upon living beings, universally causing every one of them to rejoice, their mind pure and free of every defilement — those without equal practice this path.
Their mental karma utterly pure and thoroughly disciplined, free of every idle discourse, without any fault of speech, their majestic light fully complete and revered by the multitude — those most supreme practice this path. Entering the true and real meaning, reaching all the way to the other shore, abiding in the very place of merit, their mind forever tranquil, forever held in the mindful protection of every buddha, never once forgotten — those who extinguish existence practice this path.
遠離於我無惱害，恒以大音宣正法，
十方國土靡不周，彼絕譬者行斯道。
檀波羅蜜已成滿，百福相好所莊嚴，
眾生見者皆欣悅，彼最勝慧行斯道。
智地甚深難可入，能以妙慧善安住，
其心究竟不動搖，彼堅固行行斯道。
法界所有悉能入，隨所入處咸究竟，
神通自在靡不該，彼法光明行此道。
Forever apart from any notion of self, causing no vexation or harm to any, forever proclaiming the true Dharma with a great voice, reaching throughout the lands of the ten directions without exception — those beyond all comparison practice this path. The perfection of giving already brought to full completion, adorned with the very marks and signs born of a hundred blessings, every living being who beholds them filled with joy — that one of most supreme wisdom practices this path.
The ground of wisdom is profound and difficult to enter, and yet through wondrous wisdom they are able to abide there well, their mind ultimately unwavering and unmoved — that one of firm and resolute practice follows this path. Entirely able to enter everything there is within the Dharma-realm, and wherever they enter, bringing it entirely to its ultimate end, their spiritual powers sovereign and free, leaving nothing at all unencompassed — that one of the Dharma's own radiance practices this path.
諸無等等大牟尼，勤修三昧無二相，
心常在定樂寂靜，彼普見者行斯道。
微細廣大諸國土，更相涉入各差別，
如其境界悉了知，彼智山王行此道。
意常明潔離諸垢，於三界中無所著，
護持眾戒到彼岸，此淨心者行斯道。
智慧無邊不可說，普遍法界虛空界，
善能修學住其中，彼金剛慧行斯道。
Every great sage beyond all equal or comparison diligently cultivates samādhi free of any mark of duality, their mind forever abiding in stillness, delighting in tranquility — that one of universal vision practices this path. Every land there is, subtle and minute or vast and expansive, mutually interpenetrating each in its own distinct way, understanding their every domain entirely just as it is — that king among mountains of wisdom practices this path.
Their mind forever bright and pure, free of every defilement, clinging to nothing at all within the three realms, upholding and guarding every precept, reaching all the way to the other shore — this one of pure mind practices this path. Their wisdom boundless and beyond all telling, pervading the entire Dharma-realm and every realm of empty space, skillfully able to cultivate and study, abiding there within — that one of vajra wisdom practices this path.
This stretch of the hymn turns from qualities of conduct — fearlessness, purity of speech, freedom from any notion of self — toward qualities of wisdom itself: the perfection of giving completed, the profound ground of wisdom entered, mastery of samādhi free of duality, and finally the boundless wisdom likened to vajra, unbreakable and all-pervading. The refrain's changing epithets — "supreme virtue," "king among mountains of wisdom," "vajra wisdom" — quietly build toward the ten practices this hymn restates.
