Ten Kinds of Precept

The second treasury, moral discipline, unfolds into ten distinct kinds of precept — universal benefit, accepting no other doctrine, dwelling nowhere, freedom from regret, freedom from contention, harming no one, freedom from mixture, freedom from craving, freedom from fault, and freedom from transgression — each one defined not by the rule it enforces but by the motive it refuses to act from.

Ten Precepts, Each Defined by Its Own Motive

Where the treasury of faith described a mind that could not be shaken, the treasury of moral discipline describes precepts distinguished from one another entirely by intention: the same outward conduct becomes a different precept depending on why it is kept — for universal benefit rather than status, free of regret because no grave fault was ever committed, free of mixture because no extreme view was ever mixed in.

"Son of the Buddha! What is the bodhisattva-mahāsattva's treasury of moral discipline? This bodhisattva accomplishes the precept of universal benefit, the precept of accepting no other doctrine, the precept of dwelling nowhere, the precept free of regret, the precept free of contention, the precept that harms no one, the precept free of mixture, the precept free of craving, the precept free of fault, and the precept free of transgression. What is the precept of universal benefit? This bodhisattva upholds pure precepts fundamentally for the sake of benefiting every living being. What is the precept of accepting no other doctrine? This bodhisattva does not accept or practice any of the precepts belonging to non-Buddhist paths, but by their own nature diligently upholds the equal, pure precepts of every buddha and Tathāgata across the three periods of time. What is the precept of dwelling nowhere? When this bodhisattva upholds the precepts, their mind does not dwell in the realm of desire, does not dwell in the realm of form, and does not dwell in the formless realm. Why is this so? Because they do not seek rebirth in any of them, and yet still uphold the precepts. What is the precept free of regret? This bodhisattva forever abides securely in a mind free of regret. Why is this so? Because they commit no grave transgression, practice no flattery or deceit, and never break the pure precepts. What is the precept free of contention? This bodhisattva neither disputes what has already been established nor fabricates anything further; their mind forever accords with the precepts that lead toward nirvāṇa, upholding them fully and completely, without any transgression at all. They do not, through upholding the precepts, cause vexation to other living beings or make them suffer, but wish only that every mind might forever rejoice, and so they uphold the precepts.

Ru-Yi Translation

What is the precept that harms no one? This bodhisattva does not, because of the precepts, study spells and incantations or concoct medicines and potions in order to harm living beings, but upholds the precepts only for the sake of rescuing and protecting every living being. What is the precept free of mixture? This bodhisattva does not cling to any extreme view, does not uphold any mixed precept, but contemplates dependent origination and upholds the precept of renunciation alone. What is the precept free of craving? This bodhisattva does not display any unusual appearance in order to make a show of their own virtue, but upholds the precepts only in order to fulfill the Dharma of renunciation. What is the precept free of fault? This bodhisattva does not boast of themselves, saying, "I uphold the precepts"; and upon seeing one who has broken the precepts, they do not belittle or disparage them, causing them shame — they uphold the precepts with a single, unified mind alone. What is the precept free of transgression? This bodhisattva forever cuts off killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, false speech, divisive speech, harsh speech, and idle speech, along with greed, hatred, and wrong view, fully and completely upholding the ten wholesome deeds. When the bodhisattva upholds this precept free of transgression, they reflect in this way: "Every living being who transgresses the pure precepts does so entirely because of delusion; only the Buddha, the World-Honored One, is able to know by what causes and conditions living beings give rise to delusion and transgress the pure precepts. I myself shall accomplish unsurpassed bodhi, and shall extensively expound the true and real Dharma for the sake of living beings, causing them to be free of delusion." This is called the bodhisattva-mahāsattva's second treasury: the treasury of moral discipline.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

Each of these ten precepts names the same underlying discipline but excludes a different wrong reason for keeping it: not for status, not for rebirth in a pleasant realm, not to avoid vexing others into resentment, not to profit from spells learned "for protection," not to signal one's own virtue, and not to shame those who have broken it. What remains after every wrong motive is excluded is the bodhisattva's own reflection at the close: living beings transgress precepts "entirely because of delusion," and the appropriate response to that is not condemnation but the vow to become capable of teaching them out of it.
