A Hundred Million Sounds, Each Praising Something Different

The palace's ornament finally becomes sound: banner-poles hung with bells, flowers, and garments give way to conches, drums, harps, and mṛdaṅgas playing all at once — and then, in the passage's final turn, to a hundred million distinct sounds, each one praising a specific aspect of the Dharma rather than simply repeating the same note of praise over and over.

From Music to Meaning

The description moves from ornament to sound: banner-poles bearing bells, silks, fragrance, and flowers, and then instruments — conches, drums, harps, mṛdaṅgas — playing together at once, some struck, some sounding of their own accord. The passage's final and longest stretch turns this music into something more specific: not a wash of pleasant noise but a hundred million distinct sounds, each one praising a named aspect of the Dharma in turn.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

Where the earlier catalogs of nets, curtains, and flowers named a hundred million of the same kind of thing, this final catalog of sounds names a hundred million different objects of praise — offerings, service, cultivation, karmic fruit, the bodhisattva grounds, the Tathāgata's own secret treasury — each getting its own sound rather than sharing a generic one. The music has, in effect, become instruction: a hall filled with a hundred million kinds of teaching, arriving not as words but as something one simply hears.
