Every Heaven, Each in Its Own Posture
The eight classes of guardian kings — deva, nāga, yakṣa, gandharva, asura, garuḍa, kiṃnara, and mahoraga — each respond in one distinctive gesture: gazing without blinking, cutting off pride, holding a ribbon in the beak. Then, heaven by heaven, from Trāyastriṃśa up through the Brahmā heavens to Akaniṣṭha at the very summit, every realm of the traditional cosmology bows toward the throne in its own particular way.
One Gesture per Class, One Posture per Heaven
Where the previous Part gave every stage of the bodhisattva path a single defining response, this one does the same for the assembled hosts of the cosmos: each of the eight guardian classes gets one physical gesture entirely its own, and then every heaven, ascending from the realm of desire through every tier of the realm of form, bows, prostrates, or gazes in its own particular manner.

A hundred million heavenly kings, reverently paying homage; a hundred million nāga kings, gazing intently without ever growing weary; a hundred million yakṣa kings, joining their palms above their own heads; a hundred million gandharva kings, giving rise to a pure and faithful mind; a hundred million asura kings, cutting off every thought of arrogance and pride; a hundred million garuḍa kings, holding silk ribbons in their beaks; a hundred million kiṃnara kings, leaping for joy; and a hundred million mahoraga kings, gazing up in joyful reverence. A hundred million bodhisattvas, raising their voices in praise; a hundred million heavenly maidens, single-mindedly making offerings; a hundred million gods of shared vows, leaping for joy; a hundred million gods who once dwelled together in ages past, extolling with wondrous voices; a hundred million gods of Brahmā's own body, prostrating their whole body in reverent homage; a hundred million gods of Brahmā's ministers, joining their palms above their heads; a hundred million gods of Brahmā's retinue, encircling and attending as guards; a hundred million gods of the Great Brahmā Heaven, extolling and proclaiming immeasurable merit; a hundred million gods of the Heaven of Light, prostrating all five limbs to the ground; a hundred million gods of the Heaven of Lesser Light, proclaiming and praising how rare it is for a buddha to appear in the world; a hundred million gods of the Heaven of Immeasurable Light, bowing toward the Buddha from afar; a hundred million gods of the Ābhāsvara Heaven, extolling how utterly rare it is to behold the Tathāgata; a hundred million gods of the Pure Heaven, coming here together with their own palaces; a hundred million gods of the Heaven of Lesser Purity, with a pure mind, bowing their heads in homage; a hundred million gods of the Heaven of Immeasurable Purity, wishing to behold the Buddha, casting themselves down; a hundred million gods of the Śubhakṛtsna Heaven, reverently honoring him, drawing near to make offerings; a hundred million gods of the Vast Heaven, recollecting their own wholesome roots from ages past; a hundred million gods of the Heaven of Lesser Vastness, giving rise, before the Tathāgata, to a sense of how rare this is; a hundred million gods of the Heaven of Immeasurable Vastness, resolutely honoring him, giving rise to every wholesome deed; a hundred million gods of the Bṛhatphala Heaven, bowing their bodies in reverence; a hundred million gods of the Heaven Without Affliction, their faculty of faith firm and solid, reverently paying homage; a hundred million gods of the Heaven Without Heat, joining their palms and holding the Buddha in mind, their feeling never satisfied or weary; a hundred million gods of the Heaven of Skillful Vision, bowing their head and face in homage; a hundred million gods of the Heaven of Skillful Appearance, intent on making offerings to the Buddha, their mind never slackening or resting; a hundred million gods of the Akaniṣṭha Heaven, reverently bowing their heads in homage; a hundred million gods of every kind, all greatly rejoicing, raising their voices in praise; a hundred million gods of every kind, each skillfully reflecting, adorning the scene; and a hundred million bodhisattva-gods, guarding and upholding the Buddha's own throne, its adornment never ceasing.
The physical detail given to each response is what keeps twenty-eight heavens and eight guardian classes from blurring into a single undifferentiated crowd: a garuḍa king holds a silk ribbon in its beak, gods of the Heaven of Immeasurable Purity cast themselves bodily downward wishing to see the Buddha, and gods of Brahmā's retinue simply encircle the throne as guards rather than bowing at all. The heavens climb in the same order the cosmology always gives them, ending at Akaniṣṭha, "the ultimate realm of form" — the ceiling of the form realm itself, beyond which the sūtra does not need to go, since even here the response is still bowing, homage, and reverence rather than anything more exalted.
