Praised by a Hundred Million Dharmas of Praise
Eleven kinds of bodhisattva, each named for the hand that offers — Flower-Hand, Fragrance-Hand, Garment-Hand, Jewel-Hand, and more — rain their own offering down in turn. Heavenly sons hold the throne aloft with their own bodies, and a final list of bodhisattva qualities closes the entire description with a single summary formula naming what the throne was made from.
Eleven Hands, Each Its Own Offering
The passage closes its long description of the throne and the assembly around it with two final images — bodhisattvas named for the very hand that offers, each raining down exactly what that hand is named for, and heavenly sons literally holding the throne aloft with their own bodies — before a ten-item summary formula gathers everything said across seven Parts into a single sentence.
A hundred million Flower-Hand Bodhisattvas, raining down every kind of flower; a hundred million Fragrance-Hand Bodhisattvas, raining down every kind of fragrance; a hundred million Garland-Hand Bodhisattvas, raining down every kind of garland; a hundred million Powdered-Incense-Hand Bodhisattvas, raining down every kind of powdered incense; a hundred million Anointing-Incense-Hand Bodhisattvas, raining down every kind of anointing incense; a hundred million Garment-Hand Bodhisattvas, raining down every kind of garment; a hundred million Canopy-Hand Bodhisattvas, raining down every kind of canopy; a hundred million Banner-Pole-Hand Bodhisattvas, raining down every kind of banner-pole; a hundred million Banner-Hand Bodhisattvas, raining down every kind of banner; a hundred million Jewel-Hand Bodhisattvas, raining down every kind of jewel; and a hundred million Adornment-Hand Bodhisattvas, raining down every kind of adorning implement. A hundred million heavenly sons, coming forth from their own heavenly palaces, arriving at the very place of the throne; a hundred million heavenly sons, with a pure and faithful mind, coming together with their own palaces; a hundred million heavenly sons of noble birth, holding up the throne with their own bodies; and a hundred million consecrated heavenly sons, raising their whole bodies to hold up the throne.
A hundred million contemplating bodhisattvas, reverently reflecting; a hundred million bodhisattvas of noble birth, giving rise to a pure mind; a hundred million bodhisattvas, every faculty delighted and at ease; a hundred million bodhisattvas, their deep mind entirely pure; a hundred million bodhisattvas, their faith and understanding entirely pure; a hundred million bodhisattvas, every one of their karmic actions entirely pure; a hundred million bodhisattvas, sovereign and free in taking birth; a hundred million bodhisattvas, the light of the Dharma shining forth from them; a hundred million bodhisattvas, accomplished upon their own ground; and a hundred million bodhisattvas, skillfully able to teach and transform every living being. Born from a hundred million wholesome roots, upheld and protected by a hundred million buddhas, brought to full perfection by a hundred million kinds of merit, made pure by a hundred million supreme minds, adorned and purified by a hundred million great vows, arising from a hundred million wholesome practices, made firm by a hundred million wholesome dharmas, manifested by a hundred million spiritual powers, and accomplished through a hundred million merits — it was with a hundred million dharmas of praise that it was praised.
The final sentence functions as the closing bracket to everything described since the throne first appeared seven Parts ago: ten separate causes — wholesome roots, the buddhas' own protection, merit, pure mind, great vows, wholesome practice, wholesome dharma, spiritual power, and accomplished merit — each stated as the source of a hundred million somethings, before the very last clause admits that even praise itself was offered a hundred million times over. Naming the heavenly sons who "hold up the throne with their own bodies" is a small, physical detail amid all this abstraction — a reminder that despite the scale, this is still a throne someone has to carry.
Part 180 Complete
This closes Part 180. Chapter 23 continues in Part 181, where this same throne, prepared in exactly this way, turns out to be prepared identically by the Tuṣita heavenly king of every single world.
