Seated at Last, Offerings Arise Spontaneously

After twenty-two Parts of a single, unbroken arrival, the Buddha finally takes his seat upon the lion-throne — his Dharma-body sharing the very domain of every buddha across the three periods of time — and the palace responds on its own, filling with offerings beyond all reckoning. The chapter closes exactly as it has closed every scene before this one: this same event, the sūtra confirms, unfolds identically in every Tuṣita Heaven throughout the ten directions.

The Seat Is Taken, and Offerings Arise on Their Own

Everything this chapter has described — the throne built item by item, the offerings that fell in clouds, the litany of qualities, the light from every pore — was preparation for a single, simple action: the Buddha sits down. What follows is not another catalog of what was built for him but a description of what happens automatically, on its own, the moment he does — offerings beyond counting arising throughout the palace, unbidden, matched identically in every Tuṣita Heaven of the ten directions.

Just as the King of the Tuṣita Heaven in this very world, relying upon the Buddha's own spiritual power, extolled and praised the buddhas of the past through this very verse, so too did the Kings of the Tuṣita Heaven within every world of the ten directions extol the Buddha's own merit in exactly the same way. At that time, the World-Honored One, upon the lion-throne, the treasury of maṇi jewels, within the palace adorned with every treasure, sat cross-legged; his Dharma-body pure, his wondrous function sovereign and free, sharing the very same domain as every buddha across the three periods of time; abiding in all-knowing wisdom, entering, together with every buddha, into a single nature; his buddha-eye bright and clear, beholding every dharma entirely without any obstruction; possessed of great awesome power, universally roaming the Dharma-realm, never once resting; fully endowed with great spiritual powers, wherever there is a living being able to be transformed, entirely able to go there pervasively; adorning his own body with the unobstructed adornment of every buddha, skillfully knowing the fitting time, expounding the Dharma for the assembly; indescribable multitudes of bodhisattvas, each coming together from every kind of land in other directions, gathering all together; the assembly entirely pure, the Dharma-body without any duality, relying upon nothing at all, and yet able to be sovereign and free, giving rise to the very conduct of a buddha's own body.

Having taken his seat upon this throne, within that very palace there spontaneously arose immeasurable and countless offerings, exceptional, wondrous, and excellent, surpassing every heavenly offering there is — namely: flower garlands, garments, anointing incense, powdered incense, jeweled canopies, banner-poles and banners, music, and songs of praise. Every one of these, each and every one, was entirely beyond all reckoning. With a vast and expansive mind, reverently honoring him, they made offerings to the Buddha; and it was exactly the same in every Tuṣita Heaven throughout the ten directions.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

The chapter's final image quietly resolves the difference between prepared offering and spontaneous offering that has run through this entire narrative: everything before this point was made ready in anticipation, but the moment the Buddha actually sits, the palace itself responds "spontaneously," without any further arrangement needed. That the sūtra insists this happens "exactly the same in every Tuṣita Heaven throughout the ten directions" is the same closing gesture it has used at every major turn in this chapter — not as decoration, but as the chapter's own final word on what non-obstruction actually means: not one world's privilege, but every world's identical reality.

Chapter 23 and Fascicle 22 Complete

This closes chapter twenty-three, "Ascending to the Palace of the Tuṣita Heaven" (昇兜率天宮品第二十三), and with it fascicle twenty-two of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra — a single chapter occupying an entire fascicle, exactly as chapter twenty-two occupied fascicle twenty-one before it. Fascicle twenty-three opens the sūtra's twenty-fourth chapter, "Verses of Praise Within the Palace of the Tuṣita Heaven" (兜率宮中偈讚品第二十四), in which ten great bodhisattvas — Vajra Banner, Firm Banner, Valiant Banner, and others — arrive from ten different world-systems to speak verses before the newly seated Buddha, in Part 196.
