The Ten Dedications Are Named
Vajra Banner Bodhisattva names, for the first time, all ten kinds of dedication expounded by every buddha of the three periods of time — from rescuing every living being while leaving behind the very mark of "living being," through the indestructible dedication, the dedication equal to every buddha, and eight others, to the tenth: entering the immeasurable Dharma-realm. This single list will govern the chapter for many fascicles to come, as each dedication receives its own extended treatment in turn.
Ten Names, One Vow
Vajra Banner Bodhisattva opens by naming a single inconceivable great vow that fills the Dharma-realm entirely — studying and cultivating the dedication of every buddha, past, future, and present — before dividing it into the ten kinds that will structure everything to come. The first dedication is named with particular care: rescuing every living being while simultaneously leaving behind the very mark of "living being," a formula that will recur throughout this teaching.
「佛子！菩薩摩訶薩有不可思議大願充滿法界，普能救護一切眾生，所謂：修學去、來、現在一切佛迴向。佛子！菩薩摩訶薩迴向有幾種？佛子！菩薩摩訶薩迴向有十種，三世諸佛咸共演說。何等為十？一者救護一切眾生離眾生相迴向，二者不壞迴向，三者等一切諸佛迴向，四者至一切處迴向，五者無盡功德藏迴向，
"Child of the Buddha! The bodhisattva mahāsattva has an inconceivable great vow that fills the Dharma-realm entirely, universally able to rescue and protect every living being — namely: studying and cultivating the dedication of every buddha, past, future, and present. Child of the Buddha! How many kinds of dedication does the bodhisattva mahāsattva have? Child of the Buddha! The bodhisattva mahāsattva's dedication has ten kinds, which every buddha of the three periods of time together expounds. What are the ten? The first is the dedication of rescuing and protecting every living being while leaving behind the mark of 'living being.' The second is the indestructible dedication. The third is the dedication equal to every buddha. The fourth is the dedication that reaches every place. The fifth is the dedication of the inexhaustible treasury of merit.
六者入一切平等善根迴向，七者等隨順一切眾生迴向，八者真如相迴向，九者無縛無著解脫迴向，十者入法界無量迴向。佛子！是為菩薩摩訶薩十種迴向，過去、未來、現在諸佛，已說、當說、今說。」
The sixth is the dedication that enters every equal wholesome root. The seventh is the dedication of equally according with every living being. The eighth is the dedication of the mark of suchness. The ninth is the dedication of liberation without bondage and without attachment. The tenth is the dedication that enters the immeasurable Dharma-realm. Child of the Buddha! These are the bodhisattva mahāsattva's ten kinds of dedication, which the buddhas of the past, future, and present have already expounded, will expound, and now expound."
The first dedication's full name — rescuing every living being while leaving behind the very mark of "living being" — states in miniature what dedication (pariṇāmanā) means throughout this teaching: turning merit toward others without turning it into a possession, a self, or an object to be attached to. The list's final item, entering the immeasurable Dharma-realm, suggests where the whole sequence is heading — from the concrete act of rescue to a dedication with no boundary left to name.
