Surpassing Every Heaven

Having accumulated wholesome roots, the bodhisattva beholds immeasurable buddhas in thought after thought and makes offerings through an extensive litany of asaṃkhyeya gifts — jewels, flowers, garlands, robes, incense, thrones of every material, walking-paths lined with jeweled trees, and palaces of every kind, each declared to surpass every heaven. Trees with spreading branches shade these palaces, themselves adorned with asaṃkhyeya balustrades, windows, towers, and golden nets.

Asaṃkhyeya, Named One by One

This litany follows a pattern familiar from earlier chapters of this sūtra — rather than compress the offering into a single grand image, the text names each category one at a time, each preceded by "asaṃkhyeya," building an accumulation whose scale is meant to be felt in the sheer duration of reading it as much as in any single item's grandeur.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

The list's arc moves from portable gifts (jewels, flowers, incense) through furnishings (thrones, walking-paths) to architecture itself (palaces, towers, trees), each category exhausted before the next begins. Even asaṃkhyeya "profound faith" and "love and delight" appear inside a list otherwise devoted to physical offerings — a reminder that in this sūtra's own accounting, an inner disposition is offered exactly the way a jewel or a canopy is offered, with no lesser status.

Part 227 Complete

This closes Part 227. Chapter 25 continues in Part 228 as the bodhisattva sustains these offerings throughout inconceivable and indescribable kalpas, continuing to honor the relics of every Tathāgata even after their final nirvāṇa.
