The Second Dedication Is Complete
The second dedication closes with a vow that living beings attain pure wisdom, enter profound skillful means, emerge from the dharma of birth and death, and forever sever every deed of Māra — sealed universally with the seal of equality. When the bodhisattva abides in this dedication, they behold countless buddhas, subdue every demon through the buddhas' own empowerment, and attain unhindered wisdom that depends on no other's explanation.
Wisdom That Depends on No Other
The dedication's closing lines gather what abiding in it accomplishes: beholding countless buddhas, a mind equal toward every living being, and unhindered wisdom the bodhisattva attains without depending on another's explanation. The formal closing follows directly — this is called the second dedication, the indestructible dedication — before Vajra Banner Bodhisattva surveys the ten directions and prepares to gather the teaching into verse.
菩薩如是善巧思惟，無有迷惑，不違諸法，不壞業因，明見真實，善巧迴向；知法自性，以方便力，成就業報，到於彼岸；智慧觀察一切諸法，獲神通智諸業善根；無作而行，隨心自在。菩薩摩訶薩以諸善根如是迴向，為欲度脫一切眾生，不斷佛種，永離魔業，見一切智無有邊際，信樂不捨離世境界，斷諸雜染；亦願眾生得清淨智，入深方便，出生死法，獲佛善根，永斷一切諸魔事業，以平等印普印諸業，發心趣入一切種智，成就一切出世間法。
The bodhisattva, contemplating skillfully in just this way, is without any confusion at all, never contradicting any dharma, never destroying the cause of karma, clearly beholding the true and real, and skillfully dedicating; knowing the intrinsic nature of dharmas, through the power of skillful means they accomplish karmic retribution and reach the other shore; with wisdom they observe every dharma, obtaining the spiritual power and wisdom of every wholesome root of karma; acting through non-action, they follow the mind's own sovereign freedom. The bodhisattva mahāsattva dedicates every wholesome root in just this way, wishing to liberate every living being, never severing the lineage of the Buddha, forever leaving behind the deeds of Māra, beholding all-knowing wisdom as having no boundary at all, their faith and delight never abandoning it, leaving behind worldly domains, and severing every mixed defilement; they also wish that living beings attain pure wisdom, enter profound skillful means, emerge from the dharma of birth and death, obtain the Buddha's own wholesome roots, and forever sever every deed of Māra, sealing every karmic deed universally with the seal of equality, giving rise to the resolve to enter all-mode wisdom, and accomplishing every transcendent dharma.
「佛子！是為菩薩摩訶薩第二不壞迴向。菩薩摩訶薩住此迴向時，得見一切無數諸佛，成就無量清淨妙法，普於眾生得平等心，於一切法無有疑惑；一切諸佛神力所加，降伏眾魔，永離其業；成就生貴，滿菩提心；得無礙智不由他解，善能開闡一切法義；能隨想力入一切剎，普照眾生，悉使清淨。菩薩摩訶薩以此不壞迴向之力，攝諸善根，如是迴向。」
"Child of the Buddha! This is called the bodhisattva mahāsattva's second dedication, the indestructible dedication. When the bodhisattva mahāsattva abides in this dedication, they come to behold every one of countless buddhas, accomplish immeasurable pure and wondrous dharmas, universally attain a mind equal toward every living being, and have no doubt at all regarding any dharma; empowered by the spiritual power of every buddha, they subdue every demon and forever leave behind their deeds; they accomplish a noble birth, fulfilling the mind of bodhi; they attain unhindered wisdom that does not depend on another's explanation, skillfully able to open up and expound the meaning of every dharma; they are able, through the power of their own intention, to enter every land, universally illuminating living beings, causing them all to become pure. The bodhisattva mahāsattva, through the power of this indestructible dedication, gathers every wholesome root, and dedicates it in just this way."
"Unhindered wisdom that does not depend on another's explanation" names something distinct from mere learning: a wisdom the bodhisattva can rely on directly rather than borrowing secondhand from a teacher each time a question arises. Read against the dedication's own name — indestructible — this seems to be the point: faith and understanding that depend entirely on an external source remain vulnerable to that source's absence, while wisdom obtained directly cannot be taken away by anyone.
