The Great Bright Lamp of Every World
Vajra Banner Bodhisattva opens his closing verse on the second dedication, describing single-minded recollection of every buddha — the great bright lamp of every world — so vivid that every Tathāgata throughout the ten directions appears as though beheld directly. The verse moves through offerings sustained across inconceivable kalpas to stūpas raised for the Buddha's relics after his final nirvāṇa, towering like the king of mountains, before closing this section with dedication offered through the most supreme wisdom, observing that not even a single dharma arises.
Beheld as Though With One's Own Eyes
The verse's central claim about recollection is striking in its immediacy: single-minded recollection of every buddha makes every Tathāgata throughout the ten directions appear as vividly as if beheld directly with one's own eyes. From this vivid presence the verse moves outward into sustained practice — offerings across inconceivable kalpas, stūpas raised after the buddhas' final nirvāṇa — before turning inward again to the wisdom that makes such dedication genuine: observing that not even a single dharma truly arises.
"The bodhisattva has already attained an indestructible resolve, cultivating and practicing every wholesome karmic deed; for this reason they are able to cause the Buddha to rejoice — the wise dedicate through this very means. Making offerings to immeasurable, boundless buddhas, practicing giving, upholding moral discipline, and taming every faculty; wishing to benefit every living being, they universally cause all to become pure. Every kind of supreme and wondrous fragrance and flower, immeasurable and distinct kinds of excellent robes; jeweled canopies and every kind of adornment — they make offerings of these to every Tathāgata. Making offerings to every buddha in just this way, throughout immeasurable, countless, inconceivable kalpas; with reverence and honor, forever joyful, never once giving rise to a single thought of weariness. Single-mindedly recollecting every buddha, the great bright lamp of every world; every Tathāgata throughout the ten directions — there is none who fails to appear before them, as though beheld directly with their own eyes. Throughout inconceivable, immeasurable kalpas, practicing every kind of giving with a mind never wearied; throughout hundreds of thousands of millions of kalpas, cultivating every wholesome dharma in just this way.
After the final nirvāṇa of every one of those Tathāgatas, making offerings to their relics without ever being satisfied; with every kind of wondrous adornment, erecting inconceivable multitudes of stūpas and shrines. Constructing unequaled and most supreme forms, adorned with treasuries of pure gold; towering, lofty, and vast, like the king of mountains, their number immeasurable, hundreds of thousands of millions. Having, with a pure mind, honored and made offerings, they further give rise to a joyful and beneficial intention; throughout inconceivable kalpas dwelling in the world, rescuing and protecting living beings, causing them to attain liberation. Understanding completely that living beings are entirely false discrimination, they have no discrimination at all toward any of them; and yet they are skillfully able to discern the faculties of living beings, universally benefiting every kind of being. The bodhisattva cultivates and gathers every merit, vast and expansive, most supreme and unequaled by any; penetrating and understanding that their very essence is entirely without existence, they resolutely dedicate all of it in just this way. With the most supreme wisdom they observe every dharma, and within it not even a single dharma arises; cultivating dedication through skillful means in just this way, their merit is immeasurable and can never be exhausted."
"Understanding completely that living beings are entirely false discrimination, they have no discrimination at all toward any of them; and yet they are skillfully able to discern the faculties of living beings" restates, in this verse's own idiom, a balance this teaching keeps returning to — seeing through a category does not disable the ability to work skillfully within it. The bodhisattva who knows living beings are constructed by discrimination still discerns each one's particular capacity, precisely because that discernment is what allows real benefit rather than an abstract, undifferentiated compassion.
Part 232 Complete
This closes Part 232. Chapter 25 continues in Part 233 as the verse continues, describing a mind made pure through skillful means that equals every Tathāgata, and a dedication that gives rise to the unsurpassed mind of bodhi while relying on nothing in any world.
