Ten Kinds of Buddha-Bliss
Vajra Banner Bodhisattva opens the third dedication — the dedication equal to every buddha — describing a bodhisattva who accords with and studies the very path of dedication followed by every buddha of the past, future, and present. Beholding every form and every touch, pleasant or unpleasant, without love or hatred, their mind attains sovereign freedom; they then dedicate this very peace toward ten kinds of buddha-bliss, from the Buddha's inconceivable abiding to conduct that never changes or alters.
Neither Love Nor Hatred
The third dedication begins not with a vow but with a description of equanimity: the bodhisattva, following the very path every buddha has walked, beholds every form and every touch — pleasant or unpleasant alike — without giving rise to love or hatred, and their mind attains sovereign freedom. Only once this freedom brings its own peace and happiness does the bodhisattva turn outward again, dedicating that very peace toward the growth of ten distinct kinds of bliss belonging to every buddha.
"Child of the Buddha! What is called the bodhisattva mahāsattva's dedication equal to every buddha? Child of the Buddha! This bodhisattva mahāsattva accords with and studies the very path of dedication followed by every buddha, every World-Honored One, of the past, future, and present. When studying and cultivating the path of dedication in just this way, beholding every form, and even every object of touch, whether pleasant or unpleasant, they give rise to neither love nor hatred, their mind attaining sovereign freedom; free of every fault, vast and expansive, entirely pure; joyful and delighted, leaving behind every worry and affliction; their mind and intention gentle and soft, every one of their faculties cool and refreshed.
Child of the Buddha! When the bodhisattva mahāsattva obtains peace and happiness such as this, they further give rise to the resolve to dedicate it toward every buddha, giving rise to this thought: 'May the wholesome roots I now plant cause the bliss of every buddha to grow ever more supreme — namely: the inconceivable bliss of the Buddha's own abiding, the unequaled bliss of the Buddha's own samādhi, the immeasurable bliss of great loving-kindness and compassion, the bliss of liberation belonging to every buddha, the boundless bliss of great spiritual power, the most utterly honored bliss of great sovereign freedom, the vast and ultimate bliss of immeasurable power, the tranquil bliss free of every perception and cognition, the bliss of abiding in the unobstructed abode, forever in right concentration, and the bliss of practicing non-dual conduct, never changing or altering.'
The dedication's very name — equal to every buddha — is enacted before it is explained: the bodhisattva's own peace, attained through equanimity toward form and touch, is offered not as a gift given upward to a superior, but as a wish that the buddhas' own bliss might increase, as though peace understood deeply enough naturally seeks to multiply itself in whoever already embodies it most fully.
Part 235 Complete
This closes Part 235. Chapter 25 continues in Part 236 as the bodhisattva, having dedicated wholesome roots toward every buddha, turns to dedicate them toward every bodhisattva as well, wishing that vows yet unfulfilled be brought to completion.
