Attached to Nothing Within the Dedication
Vajra Banner Bodhisattva opens his closing verse on the third dedication, gathering every kind of bliss the bodhisattva has attained — of body, of eye and ear, of every faculty — and dedicating it entirely toward every living being. The verse states its own governing paradox directly: although the bodhisattva dedicates for the sake of every living being, they cling to nothing at all within the dedication itself.
Every Bliss, Dedicated, Clung to By No One
The verse's opening stanzas move through an inventory of bliss — the bodily faculty, the eye, ear, nose, and tongue, whatever supreme and wondrous happiness the bodhisattva has attained — each dedicated in turn toward every living being. Its clearest statement of the dedication's own character arrives at the midpoint: dedicating for the sake of every living being while clinging to nothing at all within the act of dedicating itself, a distinction the verse insists on rather than lets pass unremarked.
"Those bodhisattva mahāsattvas cultivate the very dedication-dharma of every buddha of the past; they likewise study the conduct of every Guiding Teacher of the future and present worlds. Attaining peace and happiness amid every domain, praised by every buddha and Tathāgata; their vast and radiant, pure eye — they dedicate all of it entirely toward the greatly wise and perceptive. The bodhisattva's own bodily faculty and every kind of bliss, and likewise the eye, ear, nose, and tongue; immeasurable supreme and wondrous bliss such as this — they dedicate all of it entirely toward the most supreme ones. Every wholesome dharma throughout the world, and whatever every Tathāgata has accomplished; they gather all of it in entirely, leaving nothing out, and through rejoicing in it entirely, benefit living beings. Rejoicing in the world's immeasurable kinds of merit, they now dedicate this for the sake of living beings; whatever bliss the Lion Among Humankind possesses, may every sprouting being come to perfectly fulfill it. Every Tathāgata throughout every land, whatever bliss they know and see of every kind; may living beings all attain it entirely, and become the great bright lamp that illuminates the world.
Whatever supreme and wondrous bliss the bodhisattva has attained, they dedicate all of it entirely toward every kind of living being; although they dedicate for the sake of every living being, they cling to nothing at all within the dedication itself. The bodhisattva, cultivating and practicing this dedication, gives rise to an immeasurable mind of great compassion; just as the merit of dedication the Buddha himself has cultivated, may my own cultivation and practice be entirely fulfilled. Just as every most supreme one has accomplished, the subtle and wondrous bliss of the vehicle of all-knowing wisdom; and whatever I myself practice while in the world, the immeasurable bliss of every bodhisattva's own conduct, the peaceful and secure bliss of entering every destiny to teach, the tranquil bliss of forever guarding every faculty, I dedicate all of it entirely toward every kind of living being, universally causing them to cultivate and accomplish unsurpassed wisdom. It is not that body, speech, and mind are themselves identical with karma, nor is there anything separate from these apart from them; but rather, through skillful means, extinguishing the darkness of delusion, one cultivates and accomplishes unsurpassed wisdom in just this way. Every conduct and karmic deed the bodhisattva cultivates accumulates immeasurable supreme merit; according with the Tathāgata, born into the household of the Buddha, tranquil and undisturbed, they dedicate correctly.
"It is not that body, speech, and mind are themselves identical with karma, nor is there anything separate from these apart from them" applies, in miniature, the same non-identity-non-separation formula this sūtra has used elsewhere for karma and its retribution, and for the Buddha's body and his spiritual power — a recurring refusal to let two things that seem intimately connected collapse into strict identity or clean separation.
Part 243 Complete
This closes Part 243. Chapter 25 continues in Part 244 as the verse continues, describing every living being throughout the ten directions gathered without exception into the bodhisattva's dedication, and a wisdom described as first, vast, unerring, and supreme.
