Countless Fragrant Everything
The bodhisattva contemplates every buddha throughout the entire Dharma-realm and every kalpa of the past, future, and present, each bearing immeasurable names, each abiding in their own lifespan to the very end of the future. Toward every one of these buddhas, the bodhisattva begins an extensive dedication of countless fragrant offerings — canopies, banners, curtains, thrones, walking-paths, worlds, mountains, seas, rivers, trees, garments, lotus flowers, and palaces, each rendered entirely in fragrance.
An Entire World, Rendered in Fragrance
Where the previous chapter's offerings moved through categories of jewels, flowers, and adornments in turn, this litany takes a single material — fragrance — and renders an entire cosmos out of it: not just fragrant canopies and banners, but fragrant mountains, fragrant seas, fragrant rivers, and fragrant palaces, as though an entire world's geography could be reconstituted from scent alone.
Again they give rise to this thought: "Throughout the entire Dharma-realm and realm of empty space, throughout every kalpa of the past, future, and present, every buddha, every World-Honored One, has attained all-knowing wisdom and accomplished the path of bodhi, each with immeasurable names, each one different from the rest, manifesting true and complete awakening at every different time, every one of them abiding in their own lifespan to the very end of the future; each and every one adorns their own body with the adornment of the Dharma-realm itself, their place of enlightenment and assembly pervading the entire Dharma-realm, arising at the proper time in every land to carry out the Buddha's own work.
Toward every such buddha and Tathāgata, I dedicate my own wholesome root universally and entirely, wishing to offer countless fragrant canopies, countless fragrant banners, countless fragrant pennants, countless fragrant curtains, countless fragrant nets, countless fragrant images, countless fragrant lights, countless fragrant flames, countless fragrant clouds, countless fragrant thrones, countless fragrant walking-paths, countless fragrant dwelling-places, countless fragrant worlds, countless fragrant mountains, countless fragrant seas, countless fragrant rivers, countless fragrant trees, countless fragrant garments, countless fragrant lotus flowers, and countless fragrant palaces,
"Each with immeasurable names, each one different from the rest" is worth pausing on amid this litany's scale — even across every kalpa of the past, future, and present, the sūtra insists that no buddha's name repeats or blurs into another's. The offering that follows extends the same principle from persons to things: fragrance is not one undifferentiated substance but takes the specific form of a canopy, a mountain, a river, or a palace, each fully itself rather than a generic instance of "fragrant."
Part 247 Complete
This closes Part 247. Chapter 25 continues in Part 248 as the litany continues with immeasurable flower canopies and palaces, boundless garland canopies and palaces, and an escalating series of numerical qualifiers — unequaled, uncountable, incalculable, inconceivable — applied to jeweled and maṇi offerings beyond number.
