The Inexhaustible Treasury of Merit Opens

Fascicle twenty-five opens with the fifth of the ten dedications — the dedication of the inexhaustible treasury of merit. The bodhisattva's wholesome roots are gathered from confessing every grave hindrance, revering every buddha, entreating the Dharma, and rejoicing in the merit of every buddha and every living being across the three periods of time, then dedicated to adorn buddha-lands whose countless world-seeds and every kind of merit-adornment only the bodhisattva's own pure eye can perceive.

Gathered from Confession and Rejoicing

Where the fourth dedication opened with a simile of reach, the fifth opens with a catalogue of sources: wholesome roots born from confessing grave hindrances, revering buddhas, entreating the Dharma, and — repeated across several clauses — rejoicing in the merit of every buddha and every living being throughout the three periods of time. This is 隨喜 (anumodanā), rejoicing as its own distinct practice, generating merit not through one's own deed but through delight in the deeds of others. The bodhisattva then dedicates the whole of it toward buddha-lands so vast that their very existence exceeds ordinary sight.

"Child of the Buddha! What is called the bodhisattva mahāsattva's dedication of the inexhaustible treasury of merit? Child of the Buddha! This bodhisattva mahāsattva has the wholesome root that arises from confessing and eliminating every grave hindrance of every karmic deed; the wholesome root that arises from revering and paying homage to every buddha of the three periods of time; the wholesome root that arises from entreating every buddha to expound the Dharma; the wholesome root that arises from hearing the Buddha expound the Dharma, diligently cultivating and practicing it, and awakening to its inconceivable, vast state; the wholesome root that arises from giving rise to rejoicing entirely in every wholesome root possessed by every buddha and every living being of the past, future, and present; the wholesome root attained by every assembly of bodhisattvas diligently cultivating and practicing the inexhaustible wholesome roots of every buddha of the past, future, and present; the wholesome root born from the mind of rejoicing that arises when the bodhisattva knows entirely that every buddha of the three periods of time accomplishes true and complete awakening, turns the wheel of the true Dharma, and tames and subdues living beings; and every wholesome root that arises from rejoicing entirely in all of this — every buddha of the three periods of time, from their very first arising of the mind, through cultivating the bodhisattva practice, accomplishing the most true and complete awakening, and even manifesting entry into parinirvāṇa, and after their parinirvāṇa, the true Dharma abiding in the world until its very extinction.

The bodhisattva contemplates in just this way every indescribable buddha-state and their own state, reaching even the unobstructed state of bodhi; every such wholesome root, vast and immeasurable in its distinctions — whatever has been accumulated, whatever has been believed and understood, whatever has been rejoiced in, whatever has been brought to fulfillment, whatever has been accomplished, whatever has been cultivated and practiced, whatever has been attained, whatever has been known and realized, whatever has been upheld, whatever has been increased — they dedicate all of it entirely to adorn every buddha-land, just as throughout the boundless kalpas of the past, every world, every place where every Tathāgata has gone.

Namely: immeasurable, countless buddha-world-seeds, known by the wisdom of buddhas, recognized by bodhisattvas, received by a great mind; buddha-lands adorned, their pure karmic practice flowing forth and drawing beings in, arising in response to living beings; manifested by the Tathāgata's own spiritual power, accomplished by the pure karma of every buddha's appearance in the world, arisen from Samantabhadra Bodhisattva's own wondrous practice; every buddha accomplishing the path within them, manifesting every kind of sovereign spiritual power. To the very end of future time, every Tathāgata, Worthy One, and Truly and Rightly Awakened One abides pervading the Dharma-realm, will accomplish the buddha-path, and will attain every kind of pure, adorned, meritorious buddha-land. Throughout the entire Dharma-realm and realm of empty space, boundless, without limit, without interruption, without end — all of it born from the Tathāgata's own wisdom, adorned with immeasurable wondrous jewels. Namely: every kind of fragrance-adornment, every kind of flower-adornment, every kind of robe-adornment, every kind of treasury-of-merit-adornment, every kind of buddha-power-adornment, every kind of buddha-land-adornment. The Tathāgata's own capital is inconceivable — every pure assembly whose past conditions accord with the same practice abides within it, and in the future age will accomplish true and complete awakening. What every buddha has accomplished is not seen by the world; only the bodhisattva's own pure eye is able to clearly perceive it.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

Confession, homage, entreaty, and rejoicing form four of what later Mahāyāna tradition would systematize as the seven-limbed practice (七支供) — and here, notably, rejoicing receives by far the most extended treatment, repeated across four separate clauses covering the merit of buddhas, of living beings, and of bodhisattvas alike. A dedication built on a treasury this inexhaustible begins, fittingly, with a source of merit that costs the practitioner nothing but attention: simply delighting, without envy, in every good that has ever been done by anyone at all.

Part 253 Complete

This closes Part 253. Chapter 25 continues in Part 254 as the description of buddha-lands continues into the present, closing with a list of twenty-nine named qualities of a buddha-land before the bodhisattva's own dedication is formally spoken.
