Part 255 of the collection · Fascicle 25 of 80 · 十迴向品第二十五之三(續) · T279

Every Land Filled with Great Bodhisattvas

The dedication turns from adorning a world to populating it: every buddha-land, filled entirely with great bodhisattvas whose nature is true, whose wisdom is penetrating, who accomplish mindfulness of the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṃgha, and who move through the Dharma-realm attached to nothing at all while manifesting everywhere within it. The passage closes on a now-familiar escalating series — from countless through indescribably indescribable — naming the sheer number of such bodhisattvas present in even a single direction of a single land.

True Nature, Attached to Nothing

The bodhisattvas described here are defined almost entirely by paired qualities that would ordinarily seem to work against each other: a mind like empty space, relying on nothing at all, and yet able to discern the entire Dharma-realm; clinging to nothing within any land, and yet able to manifest universally within every buddha-land. This is the same structural pattern the fourth dedication's closing verse built its entire argument on — unattachment that does not diminish engagement but is precisely what makes total engagement possible.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Child of the Buddha! The bodhisattva mahāsattva again dedicates their wholesome root in just this way: 'May every buddha-land that I cultivate be entirely filled with great bodhisattvas.' Those very bodhisattvas, their very nature true and real, their wisdom penetrating and thorough, skillfully able to discern every world and every realm of living beings, deeply entering the Dharma-realm and the realm of empty space, leaving delusion far behind; accomplishing mindfulness of the Buddha; mindfulness of the Dharma, true and real, inconceivable; mindfulness of the Saṃgha, immeasurable and universally pervading everywhere; and likewise mindfulness of relinquishment; the sun of the Dharma fully round and complete, the light of wisdom universally illuminating, their seeing unobstructed by anything at all; born from non-attainment, giving rise to every buddha-dharma, becoming the very lord of every superior and supreme wholesome root among the multitude, giving rise to the mind of unsurpassed bodhi; abiding in the Tathāgata's own power, advancing toward all-knowing wisdom, destroying every deed of Māra, purifying the realm of living beings, deeply entering the nature of dharmas, forever leaving inversion far behind — every wholesome root and every great vow of theirs is, without exception, never in vain.

Ru-Yi Translation

Bodhisattvas such as these fill that very land entirely, are born in places such as these, possess virtues such as these, forever carry out the Buddha's own work, and attain the pure and radiant light of buddha-bodhi; endowed with the wisdom of the Dharma-realm, manifesting spiritual power, a single body of theirs filling the entire Dharma-realm entirely; attaining great wisdom, entering the very domain traversed by all-knowing wisdom, skillfully able to discern the words and meanings of the immeasurable, boundless Dharma-realm; clinging to nothing at all within any land, and yet able to universally manifest within every buddha-land; their mind like empty space, relying on nothing at all, and yet able to discern the entire Dharma-realm, skillfully able to enter and emerge from the inconceivable, most profound samādhi; advancing toward all-knowing wisdom, abiding within every buddha-land, attaining the power of every buddha, opening up and expounding asaṃkhyeya dharmas without any fear at all; according with the wholesome roots of every buddha of the three periods of time, universally illuminating the entire Dharma-realm of every Tathāgata, able to uphold every buddha-dharma entirely; knowing asaṃkhyeya dharmas of language, skillfully able to give voice to inconceivably distinct sounds; entering the unsurpassed ground of the Buddha's own sovereign freedom, universally journeying throughout every world of the ten directions without any obstruction; practicing the dharma of non-contention and non-reliance, without any discrimination at all, cultivating and expanding the mind of bodhi ever further; attaining skillful wisdom, thoroughly knowing every word and meaning, able to open up and expound them in due sequence.

Ru-Yi Translation

May every such great bodhisattva adorn that very land, filling and spreading throughout it, dwelling there in accordance with it, permeated in cultivation, utterly permeated in cultivation, purely pure, utterly purely pure, tranquil and quiescent at rest. Within a single buddha-land, in accordance with a single direction and place, there are, in every case, countless, immeasurable, boundless, unequaled, uncountable, inexpressible, inconceivable, unmeasurable, indescribable, and indescribably indescribable great bodhisattvas, pervading and filling it entirely. Just as with a single direction and place, every direction and place is likewise entirely the same; just as with a single buddha-land, every buddha-land throughout the entire realm of empty space and Dharma-realm is likewise entirely the same."

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

The list of bodhisattva qualities never settles into a single register — it moves from ethical grounding (true nature, leaving delusion behind) to devotional practice (mindfulness of the Three Jewels) to a philosophical claim about attachment and manifestation, and finally to a claim about sheer scale, that even one direction of one land holds bodhisattvas beyond the reach of the escalating numerical series this sūtra keeps returning to. The dedication asks for all of it — ethics, devotion, wisdom, and scale — filling every land at once, without any one quality substituting for the others.

Part 255 Complete

This closes Part 255. Chapter 25 continues in Part 256 as the bodhisattva dedicates every wholesome root through ten distinct acts of skillful means, toward buddha-lands, bodhisattvas, every Tathāgata, and the deathless vision of buddhas ever arising in the world.
