Ten Inexhaustible Treasuries

The sūtra formally names what has been described across the preceding parts: the bodhisattva mahāsattva's fifth dedication, the dedication of the inexhaustible treasury of merit. Ten distinct inexhaustible treasuries follow — seeing buddhas within a single pore, entering the Dharma, remembering and upholding, decisive wisdom, understanding meaning, boundless understanding, merit, courageous wisdom, decisive eloquence, and the ten powers with fearlessness — each paired with the specific reason it never runs dry. Vajra Banner Bodhisattva then rises to speak this dedication's closing verse.

Named at Last

As with the fourth dedication, this formal naming arrives only after the dedication's substance has already been fully demonstrated across many parts — confession, rejoicing, buddha-land adornment, populating lands with bodhisattvas, skillful-means dedication, and the direct seeing that no person can be found in any dharma. The ten treasuries that follow read almost as a summary of everything shown so far, each one now given its own name and its own reason for never running dry.

"Child of the Buddha! This is called the bodhisattva mahāsattva's fifth dedication, the dedication of the inexhaustible treasury of merit. When the bodhisattva mahāsattva abides in this dedication, they attain ten kinds of inexhaustible treasury. What are the ten? Namely: they attain the inexhaustible treasury of seeing buddhas, because within a single pore they see asaṃkhyeya buddhas arising in the world; they attain the inexhaustible treasury of entering the Dharma, because through the Buddha's own power of wisdom they contemplate that every dharma enters entirely into a single dharma; they attain the inexhaustible treasury of remembering and upholding, because they uphold every dharma spoken by every buddha without ever forgetting it; they attain the inexhaustible treasury of decisive wisdom, because they thoroughly know the secret, skillful means of every dharma spoken by every buddha; they attain the inexhaustible treasury of understanding meaning and purport, because they thoroughly know the principle, purport, and precise distinctions of every dharma; they attain the inexhaustible treasury of boundless understanding, because through wisdom like empty space they penetrate and understand every dharma of the three periods of time; they attain the inexhaustible treasury of merit, because it fills the intention of every living being inexhaustibly; they attain the inexhaustible treasury of courageous wisdom and awakening, because they are able to entirely eliminate the cataract of delusion from every living being; they attain the inexhaustible treasury of decisive eloquence, because they expound the equal Dharma of every buddha, causing every living being to understand it entirely; they attain the inexhaustible treasury of the ten powers and fearlessnesses, being fully endowed with every bodhisattva practice, their crown bound with the stainless silken cord, reaching the unobstructed all-knowing wisdom. These are the ten. Child of the Buddha! When the bodhisattva mahāsattva dedicates every wholesome root in just this way, they attain these ten kinds of inexhaustible treasury."

At that time, Vajra Banner Bodhisattva universally surveyed the ten directions and then spoke a verse, saying:

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

The tenth treasury closes on an image distinct from the other nine: the crown bound with a stainless silken cord, the classical image of a bodhisattva's consecration at the threshold of buddhahood. Placed last, after nine treasuries of seeing, understanding, and expounding, it reframes everything before it as preparation for that very consecration — the inexhaustible treasury of merit turns out to be inexhaustible because it is building, all along, toward this.

Part 258 Complete

This closes Part 258 and the prose exposition of the fifth dedication. Chapter 25 continues in Part 259 as Vajra Banner Bodhisattva's closing verse opens.
