Vehicles, Robes, and Flowers

The litany of specific gifts continues: vehicles given are dedicated toward nine named vehicles culminating in the one that gives birth to immeasurable bodhisattvas; robes are dedicated toward the robe of conscience and shame that covers what ought to be covered; and flowers — offered to every buddha, every stūpa, every teacher of the Dharma, and down to the poor and destitute alike — carry ten distinct wishes, from the flower of every buddha's own samādhi to entry into a great isle of treasure where a good spiritual friend waits.

What a Gift Covers, What It Carries

Robes make an especially direct metaphor here: a bodhisattva who gives clothing wishes that every living being attain "the robe of conscience and shame" — not literal cloth but the inner covering that keeps a person from the heterodox path of exposure, understood here as both a physical and an ethical nakedness to be clothed against. Flowers, by contrast, receive the passage's longest and most varied recipient list — buddhas and stūpas, teachers and monastics, but also, without any lesser standing, "themselves and every other person who is poor, destitute, or without support."

"Child of the Buddha! When the bodhisattva mahāsattva gives vehicles, they dedicate every wholesome root in just this way: 'May every living being attain the vehicle fully endowed with all-knowing wisdom, riding upon the Mahāyāna, the indestructible vehicle, the most supreme vehicle, the highest vehicle, the swift vehicle, the vehicle of great power, the vehicle fully endowed with merit, the vehicle that transcends the world, and the vehicle that gives birth to immeasurable bodhisattvas.' This is the bodhisattva mahāsattva's dedication of the wholesome root when giving vehicles.

Child of the Buddha! When the bodhisattva mahāsattva gives robes, they dedicate every wholesome root in just this way: "May every living being attain the robe of conscience and shame to cover their body, leaving behind the evil dharma of the heterodox path that exposes the form, their complexion moist and radiant, their skin fine and soft, accomplishing the buddhas' own foremost bliss, attaining the most pure wisdom of every kind." This is the bodhisattva mahāsattva's dedication of the wholesome root when giving robes.

Ru-Yi Translation

Child of the Buddha! The bodhisattva mahāsattva forever gives every kind of renowned flower. Namely: wondrous and fragrant flowers, flowers of every kind of color, immeasurable rare and wondrous flowers, flowers pleasing to behold, flowers that delight and gladden, flowers of every season, heavenly flowers, human flowers, flowers cherished as treasures by the world, and flowers of the most fragrant and pleasing scent. With immeasurable wondrous flowers such as these, they make offerings to every buddha of the present, and to every stūpa and shrine remaining after a buddha's parinirvāṇa, or make offerings to those who expound the Dharma, or make offerings to the treasure of the monastic saṃgha, to every bodhisattva, to every good spiritual friend, to śrāvakas, to pratyekabuddhas, to their own parents and kin, down even to themselves and to every other person who is poor, destitute, or without support. When giving in this way, they dedicate every wholesome root in just this way, namely: "May every living being attain the flower of every buddha's own samādhi, able to unfold and open every dharma entirely; may every living being become like the Buddha, so that whoever sees them rejoices, their mind never wearied or dissatisfied; may every living being's every sight be pleasing and agreeable, their mind never disturbed or agitated; may every living being fully practice every vast and pure deed; may every living being forever be mindful of a good spiritual friend, their mind never changing or wavering; may every living being become like the agada elixir, able to remove every poison of every affliction; may every living being fulfill their great vow completely, all attaining the status of an unsurpassed king of wisdom; may every living being's sunlight of wisdom shatter the darkness of delusion; may every living being's pure moon of bodhi grow ever fuller and more complete; may every living being enter the great isle of treasures and behold a good spiritual friend, fully accomplishing every wholesome root." This is the bodhisattva mahāsattva's dedication of the wholesome root when giving flowers; it is done so that every living being attains pure, unobstructed wisdom.

The flower-offering's recipient list is worth pausing on: buddhas, stūpas, teachers, and the monastic saṃgha appear first, in the order a formal list of merit-fields would predict, but the list does not stop there. Parents and kin follow, and then, without any marked drop in standing, "themselves and every other person who is poor, destitute, or without support." The same flowers offered to a buddha are offered to whoever has no one else to offer them anything at all.

Part 264 Complete

This closes Part 264. Chapter 25 continues in Part 265 as the litany of specific gifts continues with garlands, each again paired with its own distinct dedication.
