Ninety-Six Kinds of Mistaken View

Jeweled carts given to śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas are offered from ten distinct states of mind — a field of merit, an ocean of merit, cultivation across hundreds of thousands of koṭis of nayutas of kalpas — and dedicated toward twenty wishes: becoming a foremost field of merit trusted by the world, hearing the Buddha's own name so that it is never wasted, and relinquishing every one of ninety-six kinds of heterodox, mistaken view.

A Field That Bears Fruit

"Field of merit" (福田) runs through this passage as its governing image, appearing in wish after wish with a different qualifier each time — foremost, pure, most supreme, inexhaustible. A field must be planted, tended, and eventually harvested; the wishes that follow trace exactly this arc, from drawing near a field of merit, to becoming one oneself, to the harvest itself: an inexhaustible accumulation of merit and, at the very end, giving up everything one has in reverent offering.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Child of the Buddha! When the bodhisattva mahāsattva gives every kind of jeweled cart to śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, they give rise to minds such as these, namely: the mind of a field of merit, the mind of reverence, the mind of an ocean of merit, the mind able to give birth to merit and wisdom, the mind born from the Tathāgata's own power of merit, the mind of cultivation throughout hundreds of thousands of koṭis of nayutas of kalpas, the mind able to cultivate the bodhisattva practice throughout indescribable kalpas, the mind of liberation from every bond of Māra, the mind that crushes and destroys every army of Māra, and the mind whose light of wisdom illuminates the unsurpassed Dharma. They dedicate every wholesome root of this very giving of carts in just this way, namely: 'May every living being become the foremost field of merit trusted by the world, fully endowed with the unsurpassed perfection of giving; may every living being leave behind useless speech, forever delighting in solitude, their mind without any dual thought; may every living being become the most foremost and pure field of merit, gathering in living beings and causing them to cultivate meritorious deeds; may every living being become a deep well of wisdom, able to give living beings immeasurable, countless wholesome roots and their resultant fruits; may every living being abide in unobstructed practice, fully satisfying the foremost, pure field of merit; may every living being abide in the dharma of non-contention, understanding that every dharma is without any doing at all, taking non-nature as its very nature; may every living being forever draw near to the most supreme field of merit, fully cultivating and accomplishing immeasurable merit; may every living being be able to manifest immeasurable, sovereign spiritual power, gathering in every sentient being through a pure field of merit; may every living being be fully endowed with the inexhaustible field of merit, able to give living beings the fruit of the foremost vehicle that is the Tathāgata's own ten powers; may every living being become a true field of merit able to bring the fruit to completion, accomplishing all-knowing wisdom, an inexhaustible accumulation of merit.'

Ru-Yi Translation

"May every living being attain the dharma that extinguishes offenses, able to uphold entirely the meaning of every buddha-dharma phrase never before heard; may every living being forever diligently listen to and receive every buddha-dharma, understanding and awakening to whatever they hear, with none of it passing by in vain; may every living being, having listened to the buddha-dharma, penetrate it to its very end, expounding it in accordance with whatever they have heard; may every living being believe, understand, and practice the Tathāgata's own teaching, relinquishing every one of the ninety-six kinds of heterodox, mistaken views; may every living being forever behold the worthy and the noble, causing every most supreme wholesome root to grow ever further; may every living being's mind forever believe in and delight in those of wise conduct, dwelling and rejoicing together with every sage and wise one; may every living being, having heard the Buddha's own name, never have it be wasted in vain, but according with whatever they have heard, entirely attain seeing it with their own eyes; may every living being skillfully discern and know the true teaching of every buddha, able to guard and uphold entirely whoever upholds the buddha-dharma; may every living being forever delight in listening to every buddha-dharma, upholding, reading, and reciting it, opening it up and illuminating it clearly; may every living being believe in and understand the true merit of the Buddha's own teaching exactly as it is, giving up everything they have, reverently making offerings." This is the bodhisattva mahāsattva's dedication of the wholesome root when giving every kind of cart to śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas; it is done so that living beings entirely accomplish pure, foremost wisdom and spiritual power, diligently cultivating and practicing without ever growing weary, attaining all-knowing wisdom, power, and fearlessness.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

The "ninety-six kinds of heterodox, mistaken view" is a stock classical enumeration this passage names without pausing to list — a shorthand for the total range of wrong doctrine a practitioner of the time would have recognized, rather than a precise catalogue the sūtra expects its reader to already carry. Naming a number this specific, without spelling out its contents, does its own rhetorical work: it signals that the dedication is not vaguely opposed to error but comprehensively so, down to every last named variety.
