Twenty Vehicles, Vehicle-Giving Closes

The dedication that closes this fascicle's extended treatment of vehicle-giving names twenty distinct vehicles — a four-wheeled vehicle built from a good land, good friends, gathered merit, and a great vow; each of the six perfections given its own vehicle in turn; and a final vehicle that fulfills Samantabhadra Bodhisattva's own practice and vow without ever growing weary. The literal carts given throughout this passage have, by its end, become nothing but a name for the entire bodhisattva path.

Every Practice Named a Vehicle

Across nine parts and every kind of recipient — buddhas, teachers, the saṃgha, the destitute — a single image has carried the whole of the sixth dedication's opening movement: the vehicle. This closing list makes the metaphor explicit by exhausting it, naming giving, discipline, patience, diligence, concentration, and wisdom each as its own vehicle, before folding every one of them into a single vehicle that fulfills Samantabhadra's own vow. What began as literal carts of gold and jewel closes as the entire practice of a bodhisattva, renamed.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Child of the Buddha! With immeasurable jeweled carts such as these, the bodhisattva mahāsattva, according with whatever is asked for, reverently gives them, entirely fulfilling every wish, joyfully satisfying every one. They dedicate this very wholesome root in just this way, namely: 'May every living being ride the vast vehicle of the non-retrogressing, unobstructed wheel, arriving beneath the inconceivable bodhi tree; may every living being ride the vehicle of the great Dharma-wisdom whose cause is pure, cultivating the bodhisattva practice throughout every kalpa to the very end of the future, forever without retrogression; may every living being ride the vehicle in which every dharma possesses nothing at all, forever leaving behind every discrimination and attachment, yet forever cultivating and practicing the path of all-knowing wisdom; may every living being ride the vehicle of uprightness free of flattery and deceit, going to every buddha-land, sovereign and unobstructed; may every living being abide in accordance with the vehicle of all-knowing wisdom, delighting together in every buddha-dharma; may every living being all ride the vehicle of the bodhisattva's own pure practice, fully endowed with the bodhisattva's own ten paths of escape and the bliss of samādhi; may every living being ride the vehicle of four wheels — namely, abiding in a good land, relying upon good people, gathering supreme merit, and giving rise to a great vow — and through these bring every bodhisattva's own pure practice of the holy life to complete fulfillment; may every living being attain the vehicle of Dharma-light universally illuminating the ten directions, cultivating and studying the power of every Tathāgata's own wisdom; may every living being ride the vehicle of the buddha-dharma, reaching the very far shore of every dharma's own ultimate end; may every living being carry the inconceivable Dharma-vehicle of every kind of merit and goodness, universally showing the true and peaceful path to the ten directions.'

Ru-Yi Translation

"May every living being ride the vehicle of great giving, relinquishing the stain of stinginess and miserliness; may every living being ride the vehicle of pure discipline, upholding pure discipline equal to the boundless Dharma-realm; may every living being ride the vehicle of patience, forever leaving behind an angry, turbid mind toward every living being; may every living being ride the vehicle of great diligence that never retrogresses, firmly cultivating supreme practice, advancing toward the path of bodhi; may every living being ride the vehicle of meditative concentration, swiftly reaching the place of enlightenment, realizing the wisdom of bodhi; may every living being ride the vehicle of wisdom and skillful means, their transformation-bodies filling the entire Dharma-realm and every buddha's own state; may every living being ride the vehicle of the Dharma-king, accomplishing fearlessness, forever universally bestowing the dharma of all-knowing wisdom; may every living being ride the vehicle of wisdom that clings to nothing at all, able to enter every one of the ten directions entirely, unmoved within the true nature of dharmas; may every living being ride the vehicle of every buddha's own Dharma, manifesting the receiving of birth throughout every land of the ten directions, yet never losing or destroying the path of the Mahāyāna; may every living being ride the most supreme, precious vehicle of all-knowing wisdom, fulfilling Samantabhadra Bodhisattva's own practice and vow without ever growing weary." This is the bodhisattva mahāsattva's dedication of the wholesome root of giving jeweled carts to every field of merit, down even to the poor and the destitute; it is done so that living beings are endowed with immeasurable wisdom, leaping with joy, and ultimately all attain the vehicle of all-knowing wisdom.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

The six perfections appear here not in the usual order but interleaved with vehicles of a different kind — the vehicle of the non-retrogressing wheel, the vehicle free of flattery, the four-wheeled vehicle of circumstance and vow. Reading giving, discipline, and patience alongside these less familiar vehicles suggests that the perfections are not a separate, more advanced curriculum layered on top of ordinary virtues, but one register among several in which the very same journey can be described.
