Thirty Wishes for a Canopy

Having already dedicated the giving of jeweled canopies through ten formal vows, the bodhisattva mahāsattva does not stop there. Ten further wishes open with "so that," each naming a canopy that covers something vast — every buddha-land, the entire Dharma-realm, the bodies of every buddha at once — and twenty more open with "and further wishing," turning inward toward wisdom, mastery, equality, and the great dedication itself. Every wish still orbits the same image: something spread wide enough to shelter everyone.

So That, and Further Wishing

The Chinese marks its own shift in register partway through: the first ten purpose-clauses open with 為令 ("so that"), and the remaining twenty switch to 又欲令 ("and further wishing"), as though the formal dedication had run its course and something more personal, more insistent, kept adding wish after wish. The content follows the same arc — from a single canopy covering every buddha-land to sentient beings simply becoming kings of the Dharma, masters of their own minds.

Ru-Yi Translation

So that all sentient beings may obtain the canopy of mastery, able to uphold every wholesome dharma; so that all sentient beings, with a single canopy, may universally cover every realm of empty space, every Dharma-realm, and every buddha-land, manifesting the mastery and spiritual powers of every buddha without ever regressing; so that all sentient beings, with a single canopy, may adorn every world in the ten directions, making offerings to the buddhas; so that all sentient beings, with wondrous banners and pennants and every jeweled canopy, may make offerings to every tathāgata; so that all sentient beings may obtain the universally adorning canopy, covering every buddha-land entirely without remainder; so that all sentient beings may obtain the vast and great canopy, universally covering sentient beings, causing every one to give rise to faith and understanding toward the buddhas; so that all sentient beings, with unspeakably many wondrous jeweled canopies, may make offerings to a single buddha, and do the same before each and every one of unspeakably many buddhas; so that all sentient beings may obtain the lofty and vast canopy of buddha-bodhi, universally covering every tathāgata; so that all sentient beings may obtain every maṇi-jewel-adorned canopy, every jeweled-necklace-adorned canopy, every firm-fragrance-adorned canopy, every kind of pure jewel-adorned canopy, every immeasurable pure jewel-adorned canopy, and every vast pure jewel-adorned canopy, covered over by jeweled nets and hung with jeweled bells that sway in the wind and give forth subtle and wondrous sounds, universally covering the Dharma-realm, the realm of empty space, and the bodies of every buddha in every world; so that all sentient beings may obtain the unobstructed, unhindered wisdom-adorned canopy, universally covering every tathāgata; and further wishing that all sentient beings may obtain foremost wisdom; and further wishing that all sentient beings may obtain the adornment of buddha-merit; and further wishing that all sentient beings may give rise to a pure aspiration and vow toward the buddhas' merit; and further wishing that all sentient beings may obtain the jewel of an immeasurable, boundless mind of mastery; and further wishing that all sentient beings may fully satisfy the wisdom of mastery over every dharma; and further wishing that all sentient beings, with every wholesome root, may universally cover everything; and further wishing that all sentient beings may accomplish the most supreme canopy of wisdom; and further wishing that all sentient beings may accomplish the all-pervading canopy of the ten powers; and further wishing that all sentient beings, with a single canopy, may fully cover the buddha-lands of the Dharma-realm; and further wishing that all sentient beings may attain mastery over the Dharma and become kings of the Dharma; and further wishing that all sentient beings may obtain a mind of great awesome virtue and mastery; and further wishing that all sentient beings may obtain vast and great wisdom that is forever unbroken; and further wishing that all sentient beings may obtain immeasurable merit that universally covers everything, all reaching the ultimate; and further wishing that all sentient beings, with every merit, may cover their own minds; and further wishing that all sentient beings, with a mind of equality, may cover all sentient beings; and further wishing that all sentient beings may obtain the canopy of great wisdom and equality; and further wishing that all sentient beings may be endowed with skillful means in great dedication; and further wishing that all sentient beings may obtain a supreme, joyful, and pure mind; and further wishing that all sentient beings may obtain a wholesome, joyful, and pure intention; and further wishing that all sentient beings may obtain the great dedication, universally covering every sentient being.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

By the end, the canopy has stopped being an image of covering at all: "the great dedication, universally covering every sentient being" names the practice of dedication itself as the final, all-encompassing canopy. Every earlier wish — for wisdom, for mastery, for equality of mind — turns out to have been a description of what it actually means to shelter another being completely.

Part 281 Complete

This closes the section on giving canopies (施蓋) within the sixth dedication. Chapter 25 continues in Part 282 as the bodhisattva mahāsattva turns to the giving of wondrous banners and pennants (幢幡).
