A Nose, A Face, Ten Wishes Each
Where the ear-dedication in Part 290 wove each vow into a full sentence, this dedication compresses: ten kinds of nose and ten kinds of face are simply listed, one after another, before a closing series of ten "so that" clauses widens the frame to entering, upholding, and beholding the Dharma itself. This closes the whole section on giving ears and nose (施耳、鼻) together.
From a Feature to a Whole Face
The dedication's structure quietly widens as it moves: ten kinds of nose named in a single breath give way to ten kinds of face — no longer a single feature but the whole visage, "the Tathāgata's own perfect and complete face," "a face reaching everywhere." The ten purpose-clauses that follow widen the frame once more, no longer describing a feature at all but the entire relationship a being can have to the Dharma: entering it, receiving it, understanding it, upholding it, beholding it, being certified in it.
"Child of the Buddha! When the bodhisattva mahāsattva gives away his nose, he dedicates it in this way, namely: 'May all sentient beings obtain the upright, prominent nose, obtain the nose adorned with every beautiful mark, obtain the nose of a good appearance, obtain the lovable and joyful nose, obtain the pure and wondrous nose, obtain the nose that accords with all, obtain the lofty and conspicuous nose, obtain the nose that subdues every enemy, obtain the nose that is good to behold, obtain the Tathāgata's own nose; may all sentient beings obtain a face free of anger and rage, obtain a face that embodies every dharma, obtain a face free of every obstruction, obtain a face that is good to behold, obtain a face that accords with all, obtain a pure face, obtain a face free of every fault, obtain the Tathāgata's own perfect and complete face, obtain a face reaching everywhere, obtain a face of immeasurable beauty.' This is the bodhisattva mahāsattva's dedication of wholesome roots when giving away his nose; it is so that sentient beings may ultimately enter every buddha-dharma, so that sentient beings may ultimately receive and embrace every buddha-dharma, so that sentient beings may ultimately understand every buddha-dharma entirely, so that sentient beings may ultimately uphold and maintain every buddha-dharma, so that sentient beings may ultimately forever behold every tathāgata, so that sentient beings may all be entirely certified in the gateway of the Buddha-dharma, so that sentient beings may ultimately accomplish a mind that nothing can destroy, so that sentient beings may all be able to illuminate and understand the true Dharma of every buddha, so that sentient beings may universally and entirely purify and adorn every buddha-land, so that sentient beings may all obtain the Tathāgata's own body of great, awesome power. This is the bodhisattva mahāsattva's dedication of wholesome roots when giving away his ears and nose.
The very first face named — "a face free of anger and rage" — grounds the whole list in something plainly ethical before it turns cosmic. Every later wish, up through "the Tathāgata's own perfect and complete face," still rests on this first, ordinary one: a face that has simply stopped being twisted by anger is already most of the way toward a face that can reach everywhere.
Part 291 Complete
This closes the section on giving the ears and nose (施耳、鼻) within the sixth dedication. Chapter 25 continues in Part 292 as the bodhisattva mahāsattva, abiding in a firm and sovereign ground, gives away his own teeth to sentient beings.
