"Not Born of This Place"

Kingship returns once more to this dedication, and once more it is given away entirely — every possession of the kingdom, and the throne itself. What distinguishes this telling is the interior description that accompanies it: the bodhisattva abides within the world yet is "not born of this place," his mind clinging to nothing, whether the aggregates that make up a person or the dharmas within and without. Ten dedication-vows follow, each naming a different kind of sovereignty — Dharma-king, wisdom-king, master of Dharma-giving throughout the entire Dharma-realm.

Living Within the World Without Belonging to It

"Though he abides within the world, he is not born of this place" states, as plainly as this dedication ever does, the paradox that has made every earlier act of giving possible: the bodhisattva has not withdrawn from worldly life, but neither does he belong to it the way an ordinary ruler belongs to his kingdom. A throne this thoroughly unpossessed can be relinquished without loss, because it was never quite held to begin with.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Child of the Buddha! The bodhisattva mahāsattva gives away every possession of his own kingdom, and is able to relinquish even his very kingship itself; toward every worldly affair, his mind attains mastery, free of any tie, free of any bond, free of any attachment; he leaves behind every evil karma, and benefits sentient beings; he does not cling to karmic fruit, does not delight in worldly dharmas, and no longer covets or is stained by any place of birth and existence; though he abides within the world, he is not born of this place; his mind does not grasp at the dharma of the aggregates, elements, and sense-fields, and his mind relies on nothing at all, whether inner or outer dharmas; he never forgets the bodhisattva's own practice, and has never once been separated from every good spiritual friend; he upholds the bodhisattva's own vast and expansive practice and vow, and forever delights in serving every good friend. The bodhisattva then, with this wholesome root, dedicates it in this way, namely: 'May all sentient beings become the great Dharma-king, sovereign within the Dharma, reaching the further shore; may all sentient beings become the Dharma-king of buddhahood, destroying the bandit-enemy of every affliction entirely; may all sentient beings abide in the position of the Buddha's own kingship, obtaining the Tathāgata's own wisdom, opening and expounding the buddha-dharma; may all sentient beings abide within the Buddha's own domain, able to turn the unsurpassed, sovereign Dharma-wheel; may all sentient beings be born into the household of the Tathāgata, sovereign within the Dharma, protecting and upholding the seed of buddhahood, forever causing it never to be severed; may all sentient beings reveal the immeasurable true Dharma of the Dharma-king, accomplishing boundless great bodhisattvas; may all sentient beings abide within the pure Dharma-realm, becoming the great Dharma-king, manifesting a buddha's own arising in unbroken succession; may all sentient beings become the wisdom-king throughout every world, teaching and guiding the multitude of beings without ever once relinquishing the task; may all sentient beings universally become the master of Dharma-giving for every sentient being throughout the Dharma-realm, the realm of empty space, and every world equally, causing them all to abide within the Great Vehicle; may all sentient beings come to be the king fully endowed with every wholesome quality, equal in wholesome roots to every buddha across the three periods of time.' This is the bodhisattva mahāsattva's dedication of wholesome roots when giving away his own kingship; it is so that all those sentient beings may ultimately abide in the place of peace and security.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

Every one of the ten vows names a kind of kingship, yet none of them describes ruling over territory or subjects in the ordinary sense — sovereignty within the Dharma, mastery of wisdom, becoming a "master of Dharma-giving" for every being in the Dharma-realm. Having just relinquished an actual throne, the dedication does not ask for another one; it redefines what a throne could even mean.

Part 316 Complete

This closes the section on giving away one's kingship (施王位) within the sixth dedication. Chapter 25 continues in Part 317 as the bodhisattva mahāsattva, seeing a beggar come for his own royal capital, its walls and towers and every toll levied at its gates, gives it all away without the slightest reluctance.
