Where Nothing Contradicts Anything
The sūtra pauses to note that even the vast accomplishments described so far — inexpressible, inexpressible pure merit — are only a foretaste of unsurpassed enlightenment itself, where every buddha-land, every sentient being, every body and faculty becomes equally pure. What follows is one of the clearest statements yet of the sūtra's central vision: pair after pair of terms, each declared to never contradict its counterpart — sentient beings and lands, karma and its ripening, the past and the future, a buddha and the world.
Sixteen Pairs, One Harmony
Sixteen pairs of terms pass through the same formula — "A does not contradict B, and B does not contradict A" — moving from the concrete (lands and sentient beings, karma and its fruit) to the most abstract (the equality of a buddha and the equality of the world, a bodhisattva's practice and all-wisdom itself). No hierarchy is implied between the pairs; each stands as its own small proof that opposites, rightly understood, need not oppose.
"Child of the Buddha! When the bodhisattva mahāsattva cultivates and practices the bodhisattva path in this way, he is already able to accomplish and fulfill immeasurable, inexpressible, inexpressible pure merit — merit that recollection and praise could never exhaust — how much more so, then, when he attains unsurpassed enlightenment itself: every buddha-land equally pure, every sentient being equally pure, every body equally pure, every faculty equally pure, every karmic fruit equally pure, every assembly and bodhimaṇḍa equally pure, every perfected practice equally pure, every skillful wisdom of the Dharma equally pure, every Tathāgata's vows and dedication equally pure, and the spiritual domain of every buddha equally pure."
"Child of the Buddha! When the bodhisattva mahāsattva dedicates in this way, he attains the Dharma-gate of joy that is every merit made pure, adorned with the fulfillment of immeasurable merit. When he dedicates in this way, sentient beings do not contradict any land, and no land contradicts sentient beings; lands and sentient beings do not contradict karma, and karma does not contradict lands and sentient beings; deliberation does not contradict the mind, and the mind does not contradict deliberation; deliberation and mind do not contradict the objective realm, and the objective realm does not contradict deliberation and mind; karma does not contradict its ripening, and its ripening does not contradict karma; karma does not contradict the path of karma, and the path of karma does not contradict karma; the nature of dharmas does not contradict their characteristics, and the characteristics of dharmas do not contradict their nature; the arising of dharmas does not contradict their nature, and the nature of dharmas does not contradict their arising; the equality of lands does not contradict the equality of sentient beings, and the equality of sentient beings does not contradict the equality of lands; the equality of all sentient beings does not contradict the equality of all dharmas, and the equality of all dharmas does not contradict the equality of all sentient beings; the equality of the boundary free of desire does not contradict the equality of all sentient beings abiding securely, and the equality of all sentient beings abiding securely does not contradict the equality of the boundary free of desire; the past does not contradict the future, and the future does not contradict the past; the past and future do not contradict the present, and the present does not contradict the past and future; the equality of the world does not contradict the equality of a buddha, and the equality of a buddha does not contradict the equality of the world; the practice of a bodhisattva does not contradict all-wisdom, and all-wisdom does not contradict the practice of a bodhisattva."
The final pair — "the practice of a bodhisattva does not contradict all-wisdom, and all-wisdom does not contradict the practice of a bodhisattva" — closes the list by folding the entire passage back onto itself: the very activity of reciting these sixteen pairs of non-contradiction is itself an instance of the bodhisattva practice that the pairs describe, method and content converging in the same act of dedication.
Part 339 Complete
This continues the seventh dedication's account of the bodhisattva's attainments. Chapter 25 continues in Part 340 as the bodhisattva attains equality in karma, in its ripening, in every sentient being and every land — and the sūtra formally closes the seventh dedication, "the dedication of according equally with all sentient beings," begun in Part 330.
