The Seventh Dedication Concludes
Ten kinds of equality — in karma, its ripening, body, skillful means, vows, sentient beings, lands, practice, all-wisdom, and the buddhas of the three times — and ten further attainments bring the seventh dedication to its formal close. The sūtra then names what this dedication accomplishes: a bodhisattva who destroys every demonic foe, pulls out every thorn of desire, and becomes a king of merit, his spiritual feet unobstructed across every land.
Ten Equalities, A King of Merit
The passage closes the seventh dedication the same way the sixth closed — with a list of what this dedication accomplishes — but where the sixth ended in ten definitions of "the farther shore," the seventh ends in a portrait: a bodhisattva who destroys demonic opposition, pulls the thorn of desire from himself, and enters everywhere, hears everything, sees every buddha without pause, all while remaining free of the very notion of attainment.
「佛子！菩薩摩訶薩如是迴向時，得業平等，得報平等，得身平等，得方便平等，得願平等，得一切眾生平等，得一切剎平等，得一切行平等，得一切智平等，得三世諸佛平等；得承事一切諸佛，得供養一切菩薩，得種一切善根，得滿一切大願，得教化一切眾生，得了知一切業，得承事供養一切善知識，得入一切清淨眾會道場，得通達一切正教，得成滿一切白法。「佛子！是為菩薩摩訶薩第七等隨順一切眾生迴向。菩薩摩訶薩成就此迴向，則能摧滅一切魔怨，拔諸欲刺，得出離樂，住無二性，具大威德，救護眾生，為功德王；神足無礙，往一切剎，入寂滅處；具一切身，成菩薩行，於諸行願心得自在，分別了知一切諸法，悉能遍生一切佛剎；得無礙耳，聞一切剎所有音聲；得淨慧眼，見一切佛未甞暫捨；於一切境界，成就善根，心無高下；於一切法，得無所得。菩薩摩訶薩以一切善根，等隨順一切眾生，如是迴向。」
"Child of the Buddha! When the bodhisattva mahāsattva dedicates in this way, he attains equality in karma, attains equality in its ripening, attains equality in body, attains equality in skillful means, attains equality in vows, attains equality in every sentient being, attains equality in every land, attains equality in every practice, attains equality in all-wisdom, and attains equality with the buddhas of the three times; he attains the serving of every buddha, attains the making of offerings to every bodhisattva, attains the planting of every wholesome root, attains the fulfillment of every great vow, attains the teaching and transforming of every sentient being, attains the complete knowledge of every karmic act, attains the serving and making of offerings to every good spiritual friend, attains entry into every pure assembly and bodhimaṇḍa, attains thorough mastery of every true teaching, and attains the accomplishment and fulfillment of every pure dharma. Child of the Buddha! This is the bodhisattva mahāsattva's seventh dedication, the dedication of according equally with all sentient beings. The bodhisattva mahāsattva who accomplishes this dedication is thereby able to destroy every demonic foe, pull out every thorn of desire, attain the happiness of renunciation, abide in the nature of non-duality, possess great majestic virtue, rescue and protect sentient beings, and become a king of merit; his spiritual feet unobstructed, he journeys to every land, entering the place of tranquil cessation; possessing every body, accomplishing the practice of a bodhisattva, his mind attaining mastery over every practice and vow, distinguishing and clearly knowing every dharma, he is entirely able to be born throughout every buddha-land; he attains an unobstructed ear, hearing every sound that exists in every land; he attains the pure eye of wisdom, beholding every buddha without ever once, even briefly, forsaking them; within every domain, he accomplishes wholesome roots, his mind free of any sense of higher or lower; and regarding every dharma, he attains the attainment of no attainment at all. The bodhisattva mahāsattva, with every wholesome root, dedicates it in this way, according equally with all sentient beings."
The dedication's final phrase — "regarding every dharma, he attains the attainment of no attainment at all" — is a deliberate paradox that closes the whole list of attainments on a note of self-undoing: everything named above, equality in karma, mastery over practice, an unobstructed ear and eye, is itself something the bodhisattva does not grasp as an achievement to be held onto.
Part 340 Complete — The Seventh Dedication Concludes
This completes the seventh of the sūtra's ten dedications, "the dedication of according equally with all sentient beings" (等隨順一切眾生迴向), begun in Part 330. Chapter 25 continues in Part 341 as Vajradhvaja Bodhisattva, once again by the Buddha's own spiritual power, surveys the ten directions and speaks a verse recapitulating the seventh dedication, opening with the bodhisattva's merit as subtle, vast, and profound beyond measure, dedicated to boundlessness even in a single moment of practice.
