Subdued by No Demon, Moved by No Doctrine
The true-suchness similes continue through sixteen further comparisons, moving from suchness transcending all measure and number — raising "a vast cloud of Dharma spreading throughout every world" — to its unmoving abidance in the practices of Samantabhadra, and finally to a suchness that can be subdued by no demon and swayed by no heretical, deviant doctrine.
Neither Cultivated Nor Uncultivated
One simile in this Part stands apart from the rest in its structure: "just as true suchness is neither something to be cultivated nor something not to be cultivated, so too is this dedication of wholesome roots: relinquishing every deluded thought and attachment, it holds no discrimination at all between cultivating and not cultivating." Where most comparisons affirm a shared quality, this one dissolves a distinction — cultivation itself becomes something the dedication no longer needs to categorize.
Just as true suchness transcends every measure and number, so too is this dedication of wholesome roots: dwelling together with the great treasury of the vehicle of all-wisdom, which transcends measure and number, it raises up a vast cloud of Dharma spreading throughout every world in the ten directions. Just as true suchness abides equally, so too is this dedication of wholesome roots: giving rise to every bodhisattva practice, it abides equally within the path of all-wisdom. Just as true suchness abides pervasively throughout the realm of every sentient being, so too is this dedication of wholesome roots: fulfilling unobstructed all-wisdom, it manifests entirely present before the whole realm of sentient beings. Just as true suchness, free of any discrimination, universally abides within the wisdom of every sound, so too is this dedication of wholesome roots: fully possessing the wisdom of every kind of speech, it is able to universally manifest every kind of speech, revealing it to sentient beings. Just as true suchness forever leaves the world behind, so too is this dedication of wholesome roots: it universally causes sentient beings to forever transcend the world. Just as true suchness's very essence is vast and great, so too is this dedication of wholesome roots: it is entirely able to receive and uphold the vast Dharma of the buddhas past, future, and present, forever without forgetting it, diligently cultivating every bodhisattva practice. Just as true suchness knows no interruption or rest, so too is this dedication of wholesome roots: wishing to settle every sentient being securely upon the ground of great wisdom, throughout every kalpa it cultivates the practice of a bodhisattva without any interruption or rest. Just as true suchness's very essence is broad and expansive, pervading every dharma, so too is this dedication of wholesome roots: its pure mindfulness unobstructed, it universally gathers in every broad and expansive gateway of the Dharma. Just as true suchness pervasively gathers in every kind of being, so too is this dedication of wholesome roots: realizing the wisdom of immeasurable kinds and categories, it cultivates every bodhisattva's true and wondrous practice. Just as true suchness grasps at nothing at all, so too is this dedication of wholesome roots: grasping at no dharma whatsoever, it extinguishes every worldly grasping and attachment, universally causing purity. Just as true suchness's very essence is unmoving, so too is this dedication of wholesome roots: abiding securely in the perfected practices and vows of Samantabhadra, it remains ultimately unmoving. Just as true suchness is the very domain of a buddha, so too is this dedication of wholesome roots: it causes sentient beings to fully satisfy every domain of great wisdom, extinguishing the domain of affliction and causing it to become entirely pure. Just as true suchness can be subdued by none, so too is this dedication of wholesome roots: it is subdued by no work of any host of demons, nor by any heretical, deviant doctrine. Just as true suchness is neither something to be cultivated nor something not to be cultivated, so too is this dedication of wholesome roots: relinquishing every deluded thought and attachment, it holds no discrimination at all between cultivating and not cultivating. Just as true suchness knows no regressing or relinquishing, so too is this dedication of wholesome roots: forever beholding every buddha, giving rise to the mind of enlightenment, adorned with great vows, it forever knows no regressing or relinquishing. Just as true suchness universally gathers in every worldly sound, so too is this dedication of wholesome roots: it is able to attain the spiritual wisdom of every kind of distinct sound, universally giving voice to every kind of speech.
"It is subdued by no work of any host of demons, nor by any heretical, deviant doctrine" places the dedication of wholesome roots in direct confrontation with opposition — the only simile in this stretch to name adversaries explicitly. Where most comparisons describe an inward quality shared with suchness, this one describes what that quality withstands from the outside.
Part 352 Complete
This continues the eighth dedication's series of true-suchness similes, approaching the end of this long list. Chapter 25 continues in Part 353 as the comparisons reach their final entries — suchness in which the past has no beginning, the future no end, and the present no difference from either, and finally, in the very last simile of the series, a suchness ultimately pure, never joined with any affliction at all.
