Ten Kinds of Equality, the Eighth Dedication Closes
After the hundred-fold series of true-suchness similes, the bodhisattva attains ten distinct kinds of equality — equal buddha-lands, equal sentient beings, equal dharmas, equal karmic fruit — before the sūtra formally seals the entire eighth dedication with a portrait of what it produces: a body filling every world, a voice awakening every being, a single pore containing every land.
Ten Equalities, Then a Buddha's Own Body
Ten reasons for equality — each ending in "because" — ground the entire hundred-simile series in something more concrete: equal buddha-lands because every world is adorned and purified, equal karmic fruit because no wholesome root, worldly or transcendent, is held with attachment. The passage then closes with images of scale that push language to its limit — a single pore containing every land, a single mote of dust holding every sentient being.
"Child of the Buddha! When the bodhisattva mahāsattva dedicates in this way, he attains equality in every buddha-land, because he universally adorns and purifies every world; he attains equality in every sentient being, because he universally turns the unobstructed wheel of the Dharma on their behalf; he attains equality in every bodhisattva, because he universally gives rise to the vow of all-wisdom; he attains equality in every buddha, because he contemplates that the essence of every buddha is without duality; he attains equality in every dharma, because he universally knows that the nature of every dharma never changes; he attains equality in every world, because with skillful wisdom he skillfully comprehends the path of every language; he attains equality in every bodhisattva practice, because whatever wholesome root he plants, he dedicates it entirely; he attains equality in every time, because he diligently performs the work of a buddha, without interruption at any time; he attains equality in every karmic fruit, because regarding every wholesome root, whether worldly or transcendent, he holds no defiling attachment, bringing them all to their ultimate end; he attains equality in the sovereign spiritual power of every buddha, because he manifests the work of a buddha in accordance with the world. Child of the Buddha! This is the bodhisattva mahāsattva's eighth dedication, the dedication of the aspect of true suchness. The bodhisattva mahāsattva, abiding in this dedication, realizes and attains immeasurable, pure Dharma-gateways, becoming able to give the Tathāgata's own great lion's roar, sovereign and fearless; with skillful means, he teaches, transforms, and brings to accomplishment immeasurable bodhisattvas, never once resting at any time; he attains a buddha's own immeasurable, perfected body, a single body filling every world entirely; he attains a buddha's own immeasurable, perfected voice, a single sound awakening every sentient being; he attains a buddha's own immeasurable, perfected power, a single pore able to universally contain every land; he attains a buddha's own immeasurable, perfected spiritual power, placing every sentient being within a single mote of dust; he attains a buddha's own immeasurable, perfected liberation, manifesting the domain of every buddha within the body of a single sentient being, accomplishing true and complete enlightenment; he attains a buddha's own immeasurable, perfected meditative absorption, within a single absorption universally able to manifest every absorption; he attains a buddha's own immeasurable, perfected eloquence, expounding a single phrase of the Dharma that, extending to the very limit of the future, can never be exhausted, entirely dispelling every sentient being's doubt and confusion; he attains a buddha's own immeasurable, perfected sentient beings, fully possessing the buddha's own ten powers, manifesting the accomplishment of true enlightenment throughout the entire realm of sentient beings. Child of the Buddha! This is the bodhisattva mahāsattva's dedication, according with the aspect of true suchness, using every wholesome root."
The closing formula names this dedication twice, in two slightly different ways: first as "the eighth dedication, the dedication of the aspect of true suchness" (真如相迴向), and at the very end as the dedication "according with the aspect of true suchness" (順真如相迴向). The small shift from being the dedication to according with it mirrors the hundred similes just completed — identity and resemblance held together rather than resolved into one or the other.
Part 354 Complete — The Eighth Dedication Concludes
This completes the eighth of the sūtra's ten dedications, "the dedication of the aspect of true suchness" (真如相迴向), begun in Part 343. Chapter 25 continues in Part 355 as Vajradhvaja Bodhisattva, once again by the Buddha's own power, surveys the ten directions and speaks a verse recapitulating the eighth dedication, opening with the bodhisattva's aspiration forever secure, his true mindfulness firm and free of delusion.
