Fifty Kinds of Conception, Known and Released
A single, remarkable passage: having received consecration from every buddha, the bodhisattva comprehends, within a single thought, nearly fifty distinct kinds of conception — conceptions of sentient beings, dharmas, lands, and direction; of a bodhisattva's own accomplishment, destruction, birth, and passing away; of brightness and darkness, day and night, the turning of seasons and years — and having comprehended every one of them, leaves them all behind, holding no discrimination at all.
Naming Every Category Before Releasing Them All
The list moves through registers that rarely appear together — ordinary categories like sentient beings, dharmas, and time; a bodhisattva's own inner states of meditative absorption, accomplishment, and passing away; and the most basic units of daily experience, sitting, sleeping, waking, day, night. The passage's point is not the list itself but what follows it: every one of these conceptions is known completely, and then released completely, in the very same thought.
With a mind of non-attachment, non-bondage, and liberation, he cultivates and practices Samantabhadra's own bodhisattva practice and vow, receiving consecration from every buddha, within a single thought entering the ground of skillful means, accomplishing and fulfilling the treasury of wisdom that abides securely in every practice; he is entirely able to comprehend every kind of conception, namely: conception of sentient beings, conception of dharmas, conception of lands, conception of direction, conception of a buddha, conception of the world, conception of karma, conception of practice, conception of realms, conception of understanding, conception of faculties, conception of time, conception of upholding, conception of affliction, conception of purity, conception of maturation, conception of beholding a buddha, conception of turning the wheel of the Dharma, conception of hearing and comprehending the Dharma, conception of taming, conception of the immeasurable, conception of renunciation, conception of every kind of ground, conception of immeasurable grounds, conception of a bodhisattva's own comprehension, conception of a bodhisattva's own cultivation, conception of a bodhisattva's own meditative absorption, conception of a bodhisattva's own rising from meditative absorption, conception of a bodhisattva's own accomplishment, conception of a bodhisattva's own destruction, conception of a bodhisattva's own passing away, conception of a bodhisattva's own birth, conception of a bodhisattva's own liberation, conception of a bodhisattva's own sovereignty, conception of a bodhisattva's own abiding and upholding, conception of a bodhisattva's own domain, conception of a kalpa's formation and dissolution, conception of brightness, conception of darkness, conception of day, conception of night, conception of the changes of half a month, a month, a season, and a year, conception of going, conception of coming, conception of abiding, conception of sitting, conception of sleeping, conception of waking — such conceptions as these, within a single thought he is entirely able to comprehend them all, and yet he leaves behind every conception, holding no discrimination at all; he severs every obstruction, grasping at nothing; the wisdom of every buddha fills his mind entirely, the Dharma of every buddha causes his wholesome roots to grow, he shares one and the same body together with every Tathāgata, gathered in by every buddha, leaving defilement behind in purity, following and studying every buddha's own Dharma all the way to the farther shore.
Among the fifty conceptions, six belong to the bodhisattva's own inner life alone: comprehension, cultivation, meditative absorption, rising from absorption, accomplishment, destruction, passing away, birth, liberation, sovereignty, abiding, and domain. The sūtra does not exempt the bodhisattva's own spiritual attainments from the list of things ultimately to be released — even enlightenment's own inner landmarks are conceptions like any other, known completely and then let go.
Part 362 Complete
This continues the ninth dedication's litany of Samantabhadra's practice. Chapter 25 continues in Part 363 as the bodhisattva, having given rise to the great treasury of wisdom for the sake of every sentient being, comes to know, within each single mind, the immeasurable minds of others, distinguishing every being's reliance, discrimination, disposition, and deed without exception.
