Knowing the Immeasurable Minds of Others
After the great enumeration of conceptions in the previous Part, the litany turns to a different kind of knowing: within each single mind, the bodhisattva comes to know immeasurable minds, distinguished by their reliance, their discrimination, their nature, their deeds, and their thought — before the same pattern repeats for place, for karmic act, for dharma, and finally for a single spoken sound, within which every spoken sound in the world becomes known.
One Instance, Every Instance
The pattern this Part establishes will recur through much of what follows: a single mind knows every mind, a single place knows every place, a single karmic act knows every karmic act, a single dharma knows every dharma, a single spoken sound knows every spoken sound — each clause closing with the same formula, "just as within that single one, so too is it within every one entirely," treating the particular and the universal as fully interchangeable rather than as different orders of scale.
With a mind of non-attachment, non-bondage, and liberation, he cultivates Samantabhadra's own practice for the sake of every sentient being, giving rise to the great treasury of wisdom, within each single mind knowing immeasurable minds, according to their reliance, according to their discrimination, according to their nature, according to their deeds, according to the function of their karma, according to their appearance, according to their thought and awareness — every kind of difference, without exception, clearly seen. With a mind of non-attachment, non-bondage, and liberation, he accomplishes Samantabhadra's own treasury of wisdom born of great vows, within a single place knowing immeasurable, inexpressible places; and just as within that single place, so too is it within every place entirely. With a mind of non-attachment, non-bondage, and liberation, he cultivates and practices the ground of wisdom regarding Samantabhadra's own karmic deeds, within a single karmic act able to know immeasurable, inexpressible, inexpressible karmic acts, each one created through various conditions, clearly known and seen; and just as within that single karmic act, so too is it within every karmic act entirely. With a mind of non-attachment, non-bondage, and liberation, he cultivates and practices Samantabhadra's own wisdom of knowing every dharma, within a single dharma knowing inexpressible, inexpressible dharmas, and within every dharma knowing that single dharma; thus every dharma, each one distinct, remains without any obstruction, without contradiction and without attachment. With a mind of non-attachment, non-bondage, and liberation, he abides in the practice of a bodhisattva, fully possessing Samantabhadra's own unobstructed faculty of hearing, within a single spoken sound knowing inexpressible, inexpressible spoken sounds, immeasurable, boundless, and of every kind of difference, and yet attached to none of them; and just as within that single spoken sound, so too is it within every spoken sound entirely.
The faculty described here — knowing every mind through a single mind — is qualified in a way easy to miss: it distinguishes each mind "according to their reliance, their discrimination, their nature, their deeds," seven distinct categories in all. Knowing everyone at once does not collapse individuals into sameness; the passage insists on preserving exactly what makes each mind distinct even while comprehending them all within a single instance.
Part 363 Complete
This continues the ninth dedication's litany of Samantabhadra's practice. Chapter 25 continues in Part 364 as the bodhisattva, within each single dharma, expounds inexpressible dharmas, with a single wondrous voice causing immeasurable beings gathered in countless assemblies to rejoice, sustaining this practice throughout every future kalpa.
