The Tathāgata's Own Boundless Activity
Picking up directly from Part 365's list of a bodhisattva's own path, the litany completes itself by turning from the bodhisattva who has just defeated Māra to the Tathāgata that bodhisattva becomes — radiating light through the ten directions from the seat of enlightenment, manifesting immeasurable spiritual transformations, roaring the lion's roar of great nirvāṇa — before opening an entirely new list: nine kinds of utterly subtle wisdom regarding the sentient-being-realm itself.
Eleven Kinds of Utterly Subtle Wisdom, and Their Fruit
This passage completes the long sentence begun in Part 365, moving from a bodhisattva's own final acts — the seven steps, the going forth, the seat beneath the bodhi tree — directly into eleven "utterly subtle" workings of the Tathāgata that bodhisattva becomes, and then into a cascade of shorter clauses describing what such comprehension itself produces: purity, wisdom without regression, and a vow never to abandon any sentient being.
The utterly subtle wisdom of the Tathāgata's own sitting at the seat of enlightenment, radiating great light throughout the ten directions, the utterly subtle wisdom of the Tathāgata's own manifestation of immeasurable spiritual transformations, the utterly subtle wisdom of the Tathāgata's own lion's roar of great nirvāṇa, the utterly subtle wisdom of the Tathāgata's own taming of every sentient being without any obstruction, the utterly subtle wisdom of the Tathāgata's own inconceivable sovereign power, like a vajra mind of enlightenment, the utterly subtle wisdom of the Tathāgata's own universal, mindful protection of every worldly domain, the utterly subtle wisdom of the Tathāgata's own universal performance of a buddha's own work throughout every world, to the very end of future kalpas, without rest, the utterly subtle wisdom of the Tathāgata's own unobstructed spiritual power pervading the dharma-realm, the utterly subtle wisdom of the Tathāgata's own universal manifestation, throughout every world to the very ends of empty space, of becoming a buddha and taming sentient beings, the utterly subtle wisdom of the Tathāgata's own manifestation of immeasurable buddha-bodies within a single buddha-body, and the utterly subtle wisdom of the Tathāgata's own sovereign wisdom of abiding at the seat of enlightenment throughout the three times of past, future, and present — all such utterly subtle things as these, he is entirely able to comprehend; accomplishing purity, universally able to manifest throughout every world; thought after thought his wisdom growing, fulfilled and never regressing; with skillful means cultivating a bodhisattva's own practice, without any rest; accomplishing the ground of Samantabhadra's own dedication, fully endowed with every Tathāgata's own merit, never wearying of or abandoning a bodhisattva's own practice, giving rise to a bodhisattva's own manifest domain; immeasurable skillful means, all of them entirely pure, universally wishing to bring peace and security to every sentient being; cultivating a bodhisattva's own practice, accomplishing the ground of a bodhisattva's own great majestic virtue, attaining every bodhisattva's own delight of mind, obtaining the gate of the Vajra Banner's own dedication, giving rise to the treasury of every merit throughout the dharma-realm, forever mindfully protected by every buddha; entering every bodhisattva's own profound and wondrous Dharma gate, expounding the true meaning of everything, skillful in the Dharma without the slightest error, raising a great vow never to abandon sentient beings; within a single thought entirely knowing the treasury of every mind and every domain that is not mind, manifesting the arising of mind at the very place that is not mind; far removed from language, abiding securely in wisdom, sharing in the very practice that every bodhisattva practices, manifesting the attainment of buddhahood through sovereign power, forever without rest to the very end of future time; every worldly sentient being's own count of kalpas, established through deluded thought and speech, he is entirely able to manifest through the power of spiritual transformation and vow.
The passage moves without a seam from a bodhisattva defeating Māra's armies to the Tathāgata that bodhisattva has become — the list simply continues, item after item, as though buddhahood were not a different category of being but the next entry on the same list. This mirrors a claim the sūtra makes elsewhere in doctrine: that the first arising of the mind of enlightenment and complete awakening are, at the deepest level, not two.
Nine Kinds of Utterly Subtle Wisdom of the Sentient-Being-Realm
A new list opens: nine ways of knowing the sentient-being-realm itself with utterly subtle wisdom — its discrimination, its speech, its attachment, its differing and its shared kinds, its immeasurable destinies, its inconceivable deeds, and both its defilement and its purity, each known completely and put to use in teaching.
With a mind of non-attachment, non-bondage, and liberation, he cultivates Samantabhadra's own practice, attaining the utterly subtle wisdom of the sentient-being-realm entire, namely: the utterly subtle wisdom of the sentient-being-realm's own discrimination, the utterly subtle wisdom of the sentient-being-realm's own speech, the utterly subtle wisdom of the sentient-being-realm's own attachment, the utterly subtle wisdom of the sentient-being-realm's own differing kinds, the utterly subtle wisdom of the sentient-being-realm's own shared kinds, the utterly subtle wisdom of the sentient-being-realm's own immeasurable destinies, the utterly subtle wisdom of the sentient-being-realm's own inconceivable, various discriminating deeds, the utterly subtle wisdom of the sentient-being-realm's own immeasurable defilement, and the utterly subtle wisdom of the sentient-being-realm's own immeasurable purity — all such utterly subtle domains of the sentient-being-realm as these, within a single thought he is entirely able, with wisdom, to know exactly as they are; broadly gathering in sentient beings and expounding the Dharma for them, opening up every kind of pure Dharma gate, causing them to cultivate a bodhisattva's own vast wisdom; manifesting immeasurable transformation bodies, so that all who behold them rejoice, illuminating a bodhisattva's own mind with the light of the sun of wisdom, causing them to awaken to sovereign wisdom.
Unlike most items in this litany, this one states its own purpose plainly: the wisdom is not comprehended for its own sake but immediately put to work — gathering beings in, opening Dharma gates, manifesting transformation bodies that cause joy. Knowledge of the sentient-being-realm, here, is inseparable from the teaching it makes possible.
Part 366 Complete
This continues the ninth dedication's litany of Samantabhadra's practice. Chapter 25 continues in Part 367 with a new list of utterly subtle wisdoms regarding every world throughout the dharma-realm and the whole of empty space — small worlds and vast worlds, defiled worlds and pure worlds, and worlds known as no different from a dream, an image, or an illusion.
