The Tenth Dedication Begins
Fascicle thirty-two opens the tenth and final dedication — the dedication equal to the immeasurable dharma-realm (等法界無量迴向). The bodhisattva mahāsattva binds a stainless ribbon about his own crown, abiding in the position of a Dharma teacher, becoming a sun of the treasury of the Dharma and an unbreakable friend to every sentient being, before vowing to cultivate twenty distinct kinds of pure conduct — unbroken, unblemished, unmixed, and free of anger — that every buddha and bodhisattva has ever praised.
A Sun of the Treasury of the Dharma
The tenth dedication opens with a single question — what is the dedication equal to the immeasurable dharma-realm? — before answering through nine roles the bodhisattva takes on for every sentient being at once: tamer, sun of the Dharma's own treasury, great merchant leader of wisdom, guiding chief, and an unbreakable, firm, wholesome friend.
"Child of the Buddha! What is a bodhisattva mahāsattva's dedication equal to the immeasurable dharma-realm? Child of the Buddha! This bodhisattva mahāsattva binds a stainless ribbon about his own crown, abiding in the position of a Dharma teacher, broadly practicing the giving of the Dharma, giving rise to great compassion to establish sentient beings securely, forever benefiting them through the mind of enlightenment without any rest; nurturing wholesome roots through the mind of enlightenment, he becomes a tamer for every sentient being, showing every sentient being the path of omniscience; he becomes a sun of the treasury of the Dharma for every sentient being, the light of wholesome roots universally illuminating all; his mind equal toward every sentient being, he cultivates every wholesome practice without any rest; his mind pure and undefiled, his wisdom sovereign, he never abandons any wholesome root or path of practice; he becomes a great merchant-leader of wisdom for every sentient being, universally causing them to enter the secure and true path; he becomes a guiding chief for every sentient being, causing them to cultivate every wholesome dharma-practice; he becomes an unbreakable, firm, wholesome friend for every sentient being, causing their wholesome roots to grow and be accomplished.
"A sun of the treasury of the Dharma" joins two images at once — the treasury (藏), something stored and safeguarded, and the sun (日), something that radiates outward without being depleted by the radiating. The dedication's very name promises a scope equal to the whole dharma-realm; this opening passage suggests that scope is reached not by accumulation but by a light that simply does not stop shining.
Twenty Kinds of Pure Conduct
The bodhisattva's own vows widen from the personal — hearing even a single phrase of the Buddha's true teaching — to the cosmic: cultivating a bodhisattva's own practice for a single sentient being within a single world, to the very end of future kalpas, and then for every sentient being throughout every world in exactly the same way. The passage closes with a list of twenty kinds of pure conduct every buddha and bodhisattva has ever praised.
"Child of the Buddha! This bodhisattva mahāsattva, taking the giving of the Dharma as foremost, gives rise to every kind of pure, wholesome dharma, gathering in and turning toward the mind of omniscience, his supreme power of vow ultimately firm; accomplished and ever increasing, possessing great majestic virtue, relying upon a good spiritual friend, his mind without flattery or deceit, reflecting upon and contemplating the boundless domain of the gate of omniscience. With these wholesome roots he dedicates in this way: 'May I attain the cultivation, accomplishment, and growth of every vast, unobstructed domain; may I attain, within the Buddha's own true teaching, the upholding and expounding of even a single phrase or a single verse once heard; may I attain the recollection of every buddha throughout the immeasurable, boundless worlds equal to the dharma-realm, past, future, and present, and having recollected them, cultivate a bodhisattva's own practice. I further vow, through this wholesome root of recollecting the buddhas, to cultivate a bodhisattva's own practice for the sake of a single sentient being, within a single world, to the very end of future kalpas; and just as within a single world, so too is it throughout the whole dharma-realm, the realm of empty space, and every world; and just as for a single sentient being, so too is it for every sentient being. Through skillful means, each and every one is adorned with a great vow lasting to the very end of future kalpas, never once departing from the thought of the Buddha as a good spiritual friend, forever beholding every buddha present before him, there being not a single buddha who has ever appeared in the world whom he does not draw near. Whatever pure conduct every buddha and every bodhisattva has praised and expounded, he vows to cultivate and practice, causing it to be entirely fulfilled, namely: unbroken pure conduct, unblemished pure conduct, unmixed pure conduct, unstained pure conduct, unfailing pure conduct, pure conduct that cannot be obscured, pure conduct praised by every buddha, pure conduct that relies on nothing, pure conduct that attains nothing, pure conduct that increases and benefits a bodhisattva's own purity, pure conduct practiced by every buddha throughout the three times, unobstructed pure conduct, unattached pure conduct, contentionless pure conduct, unceasing pure conduct, securely abiding pure conduct, incomparable pure conduct, unmoving pure conduct, undisturbed pure conduct, and pure conduct free of anger.'
The vow to cultivate practice "for the sake of a single sentient being, within a single world, to the very end of future kalpas" — and then to extend the very same commitment to every sentient being throughout every world — refuses to treat universal compassion as an abstraction that skips over the particular. The dedication's vast scope is reached only by insisting the same total effort be given to one being as to all of them.
Part 374 Complete
This begins the tenth and final dedication's prose section. Chapter 25 continues in Part 375 as the bodhisattva mahāsattva explains why cultivating pure conduct for his own sake is inseparable from establishing every sentient being in that same purity — for a bodhisattva who cannot purify his own pure conduct is unable to cause others to attain purity either.
