Twenty Kinds of Dharma Teacher
Ten further qualities complete the dedication's mirroring of the dharma-realm's own nature — non-arising, fundamental, free of any reliance, without any distinction — before the passage turns to a vow that every sentient being becomes a Dharma teacher of twenty distinct kinds: unyielding before any challenge, a sun to every dharma, a body pervading every land, and one who defeats every host of Māra.
Ten Further Qualities of the Dharma-Realm
The mirroring begun in the previous Part continues, now naming the dharma-realm's own nature directly rather than pairing it with a matching effect — non-arising, fundamental, intrinsic, free of any reliance, free of forgetting, empty, tranquil, without any fixed place, unmoving, and without any distinction at all.
"Child of the Buddha! This bodhisattva mahāsattva further dedicates every wholesome root in this way, namely: dedication as the dharma-realm's own non-arising nature, dedication as the dharma-realm's own fundamental nature, dedication as the dharma-realm's own intrinsic nature, dedication as the dharma-realm's own nature free of any reliance, dedication as the dharma-realm's own nature free of forgetting, dedication as the dharma-realm's own nature of emptiness and non-existence, dedication as the dharma-realm's own tranquil nature, dedication as the dharma-realm's own nature free of any fixed place, dedication as the dharma-realm's own nature free of any shifting or movement, and dedication as the dharma-realm's own nature without any distinction.
Where the previous Part's ten qualities each produced a matching effect for sentient beings, this list simply names the dharma-realm's own nature and declares the dedication identical to it, with no further clause explaining what that identity does. The dedication has, by this point, stopped needing to justify its equality with the dharma-realm and has begun simply asserting it.
Twenty Kinds of Dharma Teacher
A vow of unusual length and specificity: that every sentient being becomes not one but twenty distinct kinds of Dharma teacher — unsurpassed, unyielding, unobstructed, a treasury of wisdom, an eye, a great body pervading every land, a guardian of the Dharma's own treasury, a sun to every dharma, and one who defeats every host of Māra.
"Child of the Buddha! This bodhisattva mahāsattva further dedicates, in this way, every wholesome root that arises from whatever is proclaimed and whatever is awakened to through the giving of the Dharma, namely: may every sentient being become a bodhisattva's own Dharma teacher, forever mindfully protected by every buddha; may every sentient being become an unsurpassed Dharma teacher, establishing every sentient being securely in omniscience through skillful means; may every sentient being become an unyielding Dharma teacher, whom no question or challenge is able to exhaust; may every sentient being become an unobstructed Dharma teacher, attaining the unobstructed light of every dharma; may every sentient being become a Dharma teacher who is a treasury of wisdom, able to skillfully expound every buddha's own Dharma; may every sentient being become a sovereign Dharma teacher of every Tathāgata, well able to discriminate the Tathāgata's own wisdom; may every sentient being become a Dharma teacher who is like an eye, expounding the Dharma exactly as it is, not through another's instruction; may every sentient being become a Dharma teacher who holds every buddha's own Dharma in memory, expounding it in accordance with principle, never contradicting the meaning of its words; may every sentient being become a Dharma teacher who cultivates the markless path, adorning himself with every wondrous mark, emitting immeasurable light, well able to enter every dharma; may every sentient being become a Dharma teacher of a great body, his own body pervading every land universally, raising a great cloud of Dharma, raining down every buddha's own Dharma; may every sentient being become a Dharma teacher who guards the treasury of the Dharma, raising an unsurpassed banner, guarding every buddha's own Dharma, causing the ocean of true Dharma to be free of any deficiency; may every sentient being become a Dharma teacher who is a sun to every dharma, attaining a buddha's own eloquence, skillfully expounding every dharma; may every sentient being become a Dharma teacher of wondrous voice and skillful means, well able to expound the treasury of the boundless dharma-realm; may every sentient being become a Dharma teacher who has reached the farther shore of the Dharma, opening the treasury of the true Dharma through wisdom and spiritual power; may every sentient being become a Dharma teacher who abides securely in the true Dharma, expounding the Tathāgata's own ultimate wisdom; may every sentient being become a Dharma teacher who fully comprehends every dharma, able to expound immeasurable, inexhaustible merit; may every sentient being become a Dharma teacher who does not deceive the world, able to cause entry into ultimate reality through skillful means; may every sentient being become a Dharma teacher who defeats every host of Māra, well able to perceive every deed of Māra; may every sentient being become a Dharma teacher gathered in by every buddha, free of the mind that grasps at self and what belongs to self; may every sentient being become a Dharma teacher who brings peace and security to every world, accomplishing a bodhisattva's own power of vow to expound the Dharma.
Twenty distinct titles for a single role suggest the sūtra does not regard "teaching the Dharma" as one skill but as a bundle of them — some intellectual (an eye, a treasury of wisdom), some physical (a great body pervading every land), some almost military (defeating every host of Māra). The vow wishes this entire bundle, not just eloquence alone, upon every sentient being without exception.
Part 378 Complete
This continues the tenth dedication's prose section. Chapter 25 continues in Part 379 as the bodhisattva mahāsattva's dedication turns from becoming a Dharma teacher for others to a vow spoken without any grasping at karma, retribution, mind, dharma, or any of the acts and objects of practice — dedicating while taking hold of nothing at all.
