Ten Kinds of Equal Mind
Having refused every wrong reason for dedicating in the previous Part, the bodhisattva mahāsattva now names the mind with which he dedicates instead — ten kinds of equal mind, from the equal mind of fundamental nature to the mind that gives rise to the very lineage of every buddha throughout the three times — before turning to a list of twenty vows for the sake of every sentient being, beginning with freedom from the three lower destinies and ending in the vast gate of every buddha's own Dharma.
Ten Kinds of Equal Mind, Twenty Vows for Every Sentient Being
The passage names the mind behind the dedication before turning outward to what it wishes for others — first ten qualities of an equal mind, from the equal mind of fundamental nature to a mind that never regresses in its spiritual powers, then twenty vows opening with escape from hell, the animal realm, and the place of Yama, King of Death, before rising through the turning of the Dharma wheel to the vast gate of every buddha's own teaching.
"Child of the Buddha! When this bodhisattva mahāsattva dedicates those wholesome roots, he dedicates with a mind such as this, namely: he dedicates with the equal mind of fundamental nature, he dedicates with the equal mind of dharma-nature, he dedicates with the equal mind of every sentient being's own immeasurability, he dedicates with the equal mind that never disputes, he dedicates with the equal mind whose own nature gives rise to nothing, he dedicates with the mind that knows every dharma without confusion, he dedicates with the equal mind that enters the three times, he dedicates with the mind that gives rise to the very lineage of every buddha throughout the three times, he dedicates with the mind that attains spiritual powers never lost through regression, and he dedicates with the mind that gives rise to and accomplishes the practice of omniscience. He further dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to forever leave behind every hell; he dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to never enter the animal destiny; he dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to never go to the place of Yama, King of Death; he dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to eliminate every dharma that obstructs the path; he dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to fulfill every wholesome root; he dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to be able to turn the wheel of the Dharma at the fitting time, causing everyone to rejoice; he dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to enter the wheel of the ten powers; he dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to fulfill a bodhisattva's own boundless, pure vow of the Dharma; he dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to follow the teaching of every good spiritual friend, their vessel of the mind of enlightenment attaining fulfillment; he dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to uphold and cultivate every buddha's own profound Dharma, attaining the light of every buddha's own wisdom; he dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to cultivate every bodhisattva's own unobstructed practice, forever manifest before them; he dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to forever behold every buddha manifest before them; he dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to have the light of the pure Dharma forever manifest before them; he dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to have a fearless, great mind of enlightenment forever manifest before them; he dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to have a bodhisattva's own inconceivable wisdom forever manifest before them; he dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to universally save and protect sentient beings, causing a pure, great mind of compassion to be forever manifest before them; he dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to adorn every buddha-land with inexpressible, inexpressible supreme and wondrous adornments; he dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to crush and destroy every karma of Māra's hosts and their net of contention; he dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to cultivate a bodhisattva's own practice throughout every buddha-land, relying on nothing at all; he dedicates for the sake of causing every sentient being to give rise to the mind of omniscience of every kind, entering the vast gate of every buddha's own Dharma.
This is the first place in the tenth dedication where hell, the animal realm, and Yama's own domain appear at all — after many Parts of cosmic-scale vows about the dharma-realm, kalpas, and every buddha-land, the passage turns, briefly, to the most ordinary fear a sentient being might actually hold. The vast and the immediate sit side by side without any sense of mismatch.
Part 380 Complete
This continues the tenth dedication's prose section. Chapter 25 continues in Part 381 as the bodhisattva mahāsattva dedicates his wholesome roots through pure, settled mindfulness and resolute wisdom, vowing to fully know every buddha's own skillful means and fulfill a pure, supreme mind for the sake of every sentient being.
