A Pure Dharma Body, Free of Every Fault
Having wished every sentient being a pure, wondrous voice in the previous Part, the dedication turns to the body — first ten qualities free of every fault, from a pure Dharma body to pure eloquence, then ten kinds of pure, wondrous body, radiant and unobstructed, each one like a bright mirror in which every form spontaneously appears, showing sentient beings the entire path to buddhahood.
Ten Things Free of Every Fault
Each clause repeats the same refrain — free of every fault — applied in turn to the Dharma body, to merit, to the marks of a buddha, to karmic fruit, to the mind of omniscience, and finally to right mindfulness, wisdom, and eloquence together.
"Child of the Buddha! This bodhisattva mahāsattva further dedicates every wholesome root in this way, namely: may every sentient being attain a pure Dharma body, free of every fault; may every sentient being attain pure, wondrous merit, free of every fault; may every sentient being attain a pure, wondrous mark, free of every fault; may every sentient being attain a pure karmic fruit, free of every fault; may every sentient being attain a pure mind of omniscience, free of every fault; may every sentient being attain an immeasurable, pure mind of enlightenment, free of every fault; may every sentient being attain the pure skillful means of comprehending every faculty, free of every fault; may every sentient being attain pure faith and understanding, free of every fault; may every sentient being attain the pure, diligent cultivation of unobstructed practice and vow, free of every fault; and may every sentient being attain pure right mindfulness, wisdom, and eloquence, free of every fault.
"Free of every fault" attaches to ten very different things — a body, merit, a mark, a karmic fruit, a mind — as though purity were not a special achievement reserved for the most refined categories but a single condition equally available to anything at all, however concrete or abstract.
Ten Kinds of Wondrous Body, Like a Bright Mirror
The passage turns from the abstract to the visible — ten kinds of pure body, radiant and unobstructed — before comparing them all to a bright mirror in which every form spontaneously appears, showing sentient beings everything from the great practice of enlightenment to every buddha's own arising in the world.
"Child of the Buddha! This bodhisattva mahāsattva further dedicates every wholesome root for the sake of every sentient being in this way: may they attain every kind of pure, wondrous body, namely: a radiant body, a body free of turbidity, a body free of defilement, a pure body, a supremely pure body, a body free of dust, a body utterly free of dust, a body free of stain, a lovable and delightful body, and an unobstructed body. Manifesting images of every kind of karma throughout every world, manifesting images of speech throughout every world, manifesting images of dwelling throughout every palace. Like a pure, bright mirror, every kind of form and image spontaneously appears, showing sentient beings the great practice of enlightenment, showing sentient beings the profound, wondrous Dharma, showing sentient beings every kind of merit, showing sentient beings the path of cultivation, showing sentient beings the practice of accomplishment, showing sentient beings a bodhisattva's own practice and vow, showing sentient beings a buddha's own arising in the world, whether within a single world or throughout every world, showing sentient beings every buddha's own spiritual transformation, showing sentient beings every bodhisattva's own inconceivable, majestic power of liberation, and showing sentient beings the nature of omniscience that fulfills and completes Samantabhadra's own bodhisattva practice and vow." With subtle, pure bodies such as these, a bodhisattva mahāsattva skillfully gathers in every sentient being, causing them all to accomplish the body of omniscience adorned with pure merit.
The mirror does not merely reflect; it teaches. Every image that spontaneously appears in it is described as "showing sentient beings" something — the path of cultivation, a buddha's own arising, the completion of Samantabhadra's own vow. A pure body, in this passage, is valuable not for its own radiance but for what beings standing before it come to see.
Part 383 Complete
This continues the tenth dedication's prose section. Chapter 25 continues in Part 384 as the bodhisattva mahāsattva vows that his own body abides throughout every world, cultivating a bodhisattva's own practice to the very end of future kalpas without weariness, entering every sentient being's karmic retribution, every bodhisattva's own skillful means, and the boundless dharma-realm itself.
