A Body Abiding Throughout Every World

Fascicle thirty-two closes mid-vow, still within the tenth dedication's prose section, as the bodhisattva mahāsattva wishes his own body to abide throughout every world, cultivating a bodhisattva's own practice to the very end of future kalpas — entering every sentient being, every buddha-land, every dharma, and finally the boundless dharma-realm itself, abiding securely within it.

Entering Every Sentient Being, Every Buddha-Land, the Whole Dharma-Realm

The vow moves from a body that abides throughout every world to a mind that never once loosens its mindfulness of every good spiritual friend and every buddha, before closing in a cascade of "entering" — every sentient being, every buddha-land, every dharma, every one of the three times, and at last the boundless dharma-realm itself, where the bodhisattva abides securely to continue his own practice.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Child of the Buddha! This bodhisattva mahāsattva further dedicates the wholesome roots born from the giving of Dharma in this way: 'May my body abide throughout every world, cultivating a bodhisattva's own practice; whatever sentient being sees it, none in vain; giving rise to the mind of enlightenment, forever without regression; according with true meaning, unable to be shaken; throughout every world, to the very end of future kalpas, abiding in the path of a bodhisattva without weariness; great compassion, equal and universal, its measure the same as the dharma-realm; knowing the faculties of sentient beings, expounding the Dharma at the fitting time, forever without rest; toward every good spiritual friend, the mind forever rightly mindful, never abandoning it for even the space of a single instant; every buddha forever manifest before me, my mind forever rightly mindful, never once slackening; cultivating every wholesome root, without any falseness; placing every sentient being in omniscience, causing them never to regress; fully possessing the light of every buddha's own Dharma, upholding the great cloud of the Dharma, receiving the great rain of the Dharma, cultivating a bodhisattva's own practice; entering every sentient being, entering every buddha-land, entering every dharma, entering every one of the three times, entering the wisdom of every sentient being's own karmic retribution, entering every bodhisattva's own skillful means and wisdom, entering every bodhisattva's own wisdom of giving rise, entering every bodhisattva's own wisdom of pure domain, entering every buddha's own sovereign spiritual power, entering the boundless dharma-realm, abiding securely in this, cultivating a bodhisattva's own practice.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

"Whatever sentient being sees it, none in vain" opens this vow with a striking condition — the bodhisattva's own body is wished to be efficacious simply by being seen, before anything is taught or given. Everything that follows, the mindfulness, the entering of every world and every dharma, reads as an elaboration of what a body that powerful must actually be like.

Part 384 Complete — Fascicle 32 of 80

This closes fascicle thirty-two of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra, mid-vow, within the ongoing prose section of the tenth dedication. Fascicle thirty-three opens Part 385 continuing the very same dedication, now marked in the sūtra's own text as "十迴向品第二十五之十一" — the eleventh installment of the Ten Dedications chapter — as this final dedication continues toward its own completion.
